Proust, Shakespeare, Philip K. Dick, Gene Wolfe and Anthony C. Yu's translation of Journey to the West. For poetry (aside from Shakespeare's), Dylan Thomas, Auden, Eliot, Heaney, Frost, Bishop, Basho, Rind. In the next five minutes, this will change. |

Why would you want to be rescued if you have more than enough for a couple of years worth reading with you? No interruptions to stop you from reading (except the nature calls like food intake and food outtake...) | |

But by that time your screen will so horribly scratched that it won't reflect the sun anymore... I mean, youre ebook reader you'll treat with respect as you use that a lot and your sanity is tied to that. That iphone thingie is useless and will be thrown about a lot...

I've also heard that the batter can short out and start the fire all on it's own. |

"Don't rescue me yet, I haven't finished reading all of these books." One I would take (and it has been on my reader since it was first posted because it is so good and fits so many reading situations) is Harry's Omnibus of Sherlock Holmes. Among the material I would have are works by Voltaire, Gunter Grass, Asimov, Heinlein, the Harvard Classics series, Charles Dickens, Sherwood Anderson, St. Augustine, Mark Twain, Anton Chekhov, Ayn Rand, H. Rider Haggard, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Anthony Burgess, John Steinbeck, and a copy of the Bible. |

For me it would be primarily Ian Rankin, Patricia Cornwell and PD James. All crime writers so it would have to be a non scary desert island so i wouldn't be afraid to go to sleep after reading! Agatha Christie, Douglas Reeman, Hammond Innes, and, as mentioned on another thread, I would have to have my favourite reread book, One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich by Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, all of which would keep me contented for many months. Throw in a few books relating to my beloved Arsenal Football Club and i would probably prefer not to be rescued!

I am partial to Ardal O'Hanlon's choices of Island Necessity books. My first book would be a big, plastic inflatable book. My second choice is "How to Make Oars from Sand". |

Kind of moot, don't you think? With just a few 32GB SD cards you could have the Library of Congress!
