But I miss the Mobile version of Mobipocket Reader, for its lookup system !
I think looking up each word I do not totally know what it mean (you can nearly always guess some plausible meaning which is correct very often) is very disruptive. Waiting to the end of a chapter would make it less disruptive.

It depends. If a book describes a character as a "tall, #### man", where #### is a word you don't know the meaning of, you'd probably want to look it up before it gets too late to change your mental picture of that man

Well, I usually do not have mental pictures in great detail of the characters. For me it is adjectives that I sometimes have to look up but the exact meaning is usually not relevant to the enjoyment of the book.

It depends on how much words you need to look up. In my case, for example, nearly ten words in the book. Not so much, so no sense (or utility) in waiting for the end of the chapter.

I find this dictionary debate interesting because it is clearly an important need for many people, but I never use one.

I wonder if it has something to do with the fact that I primarily read Science Fiction and Fantasy? Often the books are full of invented terms that I don't really grok*. You have to tease out the meaning from the context, or sometimes wait for it to be revealed to you. However, dictionaries wouldn't help since the words are artificial.

MLH

*grok is an invented word from Stranger in a Strange land. It means to know or understand, but it refers to a deep understanding that implies you have completely internalized the concept.

No, ePub doesn't support dictionaries...

I have an original cybook and have never upgraded the firmware as I had no need and all I really ever wanted was folder support. However, over the last 2 years, ePub seems to be the defacto standard in UK (Waterstones, Borders, etc). However, all my books are .prc.

So, as ErwinOtten said, can I upgrade once for the mobipocket firmware and then onto a separate SD card for the epub firmware? Then switch from one format to the other by changing the SD card?

Nope. The best way is to convert all your books (mobiDeDrm and calibre are your friends ). Worth it if you're in the UK, as, as you said, ePub is now the standard in Europe. Uk website have become my source for e-books since I went ePub.

PM me if you need help with converting.

Mmm, Borders, i'll check this out.

Ah, I thought I was being a bit ambitious there! Disappointed as I used Fictionwise but don't see ePub format with them. I shall have a go with those applications you recommended. Thanks again! Much appreciated.

P.S Go here for Borders
