Notice the apostrophe in Hawai`i is backwards, that is actually a letter in the Hawaiian language called the ʻ`okina sometimes called the "glottal stop" and is pronounce as a catching of the breath. That is how some Hawai`ian words can have no consonants. For instance the town I live in is named Aiea or `Aiea. The `okina serves as the consonant. Last edited by wodin; 08-20-2009 at 01:41 PM. | |

Awesome responses! I'm just back on Oahu, in Hawaii, after two years in Thailand. Not local born, just lived for 4 years prior to Thailand (Master's of Fine Arts at the University of Hawaii, Manoa.) Wanted to see if there were enough folks for a meetup, or maybe just coffee-klatsch. At which, I would drink tea. I literally just found a place to live, after a week on the island. Honolulu has the hardest housing ever, especially after Thailand, where it is ridiculously easy and inexpensive. You will laugh at me, but I was so busy with my MFA that I haven't yet visited the Big Island, or Maui. But I will, promise. So, anyhow, that makes three of us, right? On two islands! m a r |

Hulo, hulo! Aia 3 kanaka ma Hawai'i- he mea kupaianaha Welcome to the cool club incidentally, I don't stick the 'okina into "Hawaiian" because that's not a Hawaiian word, it's an English version of a Hawaiian concept. Hawaiian words never end in a consonant, and never have two consonants next to one another. An the 'okina is a consonant. 13 letters- 5 vowels, 8 consonants. In Hawaiian, you'd just stick the word "Hawai'i" on the back as a modifier. Like Hawaiian flag would be "hae Hawai'i." And there ends the lesson for the day. |

Thanks. Somewhere I have mp3s for learning Hawaiian. Now that I'm back (and I hope to stay) I expect that I'll learn as much as I can. If things settle in well, I'll take some classes, too. Thanks for the welcome, I feel cool. Except for the sunburn... (I turned that wonderful shade of white-blue that fluorescent lights enhance while in Thailand. Big cultural bias to avoid the sun.) m a r |
