I remember some of the larger ones came with clothes and brushes to "style" their hair. We kids were such suckers for the latest fad!! Okay, now that I think about it, I guess you could consider my obsession for the latest techno gadget in a similar light. So, I'm still a sucker for the latest fad. | |

This thread managed to become distressingly unflattering to those from both sides of the debate.

I've been online since the very first public BBS was put up in the next town over from me. So yes, I've seen the usage of these terms evolve and the meaning of troll as applied to the net did start with IRC. The term you want as applied to Usenet is a flamer.

Trolling, as I remember, did originate on a usenet group, but generally, was always used in the terms of something that a flamer did (at least in the groups I was at). I didn't see it used as a noun until after I started hanging out in chat rooms and IRC channels in the late '90s.

Hey, wait a minute! Everybody is talking about trolls on BBS and usenets and chat rooms, but I happen to know for sure that they hang out under bridges. If you don't believe me, go ask Billy Goat Gruff! Hmmm.. Bill the Smith = Billy Goat Gruff? Maybe?.... |

Hey! Come-on guys I have avoided posting here because am I really the only one who thinks this whole 'Bill the Smith' saga is very transparent!? I know we want to make the forum - 'busy'- but why is this the way? |
