This probably means that Sony is admitting defeat and throwing in the towel in the ebook business ; or more appropriately as mentioned in other threads here on this subject.

Given that no new devices have been announced, it may very well be that Sony have decided that the eBook business is not economically viable for them and are pulling out. We'll have to wait and see what develops.

I am unfortunately with HarryT on this one. As for red and silver ... they sell less and made a lot so Sony probably has stock. |

Considering that they have announced new mac compatible software & if you go to the ebookstore they say they will have new features soon, it is highly unlikely they are getting out of the ebook business. And the rumors have been that there will be an announcement of a new reader soon (August).

They are only available until they sell out!! 700's were first to sell out. Short retail life of only 8 months. They did not produce more because of the glare problem. Now the PRS-505/LC. This was by far the most popular color. That is why it was first to sell out. The next generation will be out before Christmas. Sony has released a new model each year. Rumors have it that sony has sold 300,000 units. I find it highly unlikely they will bounce out the the reader biz. My guess is that they have switched all their production capacity to a new device, or devices, and they underestimated demand for the existing units. I am a bit surprised that they are apparently replacing the PRS-505. It is an old design, but it is price and feature competitive even with new devices.

I'm betting Sony offers at least one more generation of devices before they throw in the towel. The Kindle gets too much press for Sony to not want some of that mindshare. OTOH, I also thought they'd improve their Library and e-store software more than they have. It just isn't, um, polished enough. |

Lack of ePub is going to be the Kindle's downfall. And the DX's downfall is the poor software on it.

Note that Sony have nearly ceased in their making available new ebook titles at their store in the past month: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=16810 One possibility is that they are waiting for the existing devices to all be sold and then they might announce that they are exiting the business. Another possibility is that these are separate issues which have their own explanations - like a new device model about to be released and a new method of delivering ebook titles to customers. |

Being the #2 player in a market is not a bad place to be. Look at Target. They're #2 to Walmart. Target does outstanding business using many of the same practices as Walmart, but Walmart is the focus of protests for those business practices. |
