The screen of the DR1000 is A5-size; the whole device is considerably smaller than a sheet of A4. Is that "monstrous"? It's certainly too big to put in your pocket, but very easy to put into a bag.
Unfortunately, if you want to read PDF journal articles, you really do need a screen of around that size. |

Another option that might be worth waiting for: a combined epaper/lcd display for netbooks, which could be out by the end of this year.
