calibre friday preview releases

Once again, updating the calibre source has broken calibre. (Calibre 9.16, source downloaded about 20 minutes ago). Hopefully either a point release or a new release will again fix this. Until then, open calibre without source.

I looked at d:\calibre\calibre-master\src\calibre\gui2\__init__.py and replaced the code from line 96 with:

Released 9.16.100 the main new feature is that the amazon and google images metadata plugins now work again by using camoufox.

Sadly while 9.16.0 from source worked with Amazon to download metadata, the 9.16.100 from source gives me an errno 22 on metadata downloads from Amazon regardless of whether using Amazon servers or a search engine.

I also noted that regardless of which country I set for the Amazon servers, Amazon.ca was used and if I fed the URL into Firefox, it returned the correct result.

The Google cover download also failed with an errno 22 while the Amazon cover downloaded failed with an errno 22. Trying search engine and the search for the cover also failed.

Using the Windows version of 9.16.0 on Windows 11, the viewer was unable to display a JXL image. I just got a blank window.

I get the same results as JSWolf. In my test file, none of the .jxl images open and large .avif images are slow to open. The first 4 images are the large versions, the last 4 are shrunk to a more normal size.

The windows metadata download bug when running from source is now fixed. As for JXL support that will come when Qt WebEngine is updated to a version of chrome that supports it. In calibre it is only supported for conversions not viewing/editing, there arent any EPUB books with JXL images anyway, so it's not urgent. I just decided to add support for it now since I was in the area. As for performance, that comes from Qt WebEngine when viewing/editing, not calibre.

A new preview build 9.17.100 is available for testing. The main changes:

Edit book: accessibility
- New Tools->Accessibility dialog: set the book and HTML file languages,
write or review alternative text for every image in one place (or mark
images as decorative), and edit the EPUB accessibility metadata.
- Check book now reports accessibility problems, such as missing languages,
images (including SVG images) without alternative text, and epub:type
values with no matching ARIA role.
- Colors in the editor are previewed as underlines, and you can Ctrl+click a
color to change it with a color wheel.

Content server
- KOReader progress sync: KOReader devices can now sync reading positions
through the calibre Content server (at /kosync), using your Content
server username and password.
- OPDS 2.0 support: OPDS clients that ask for it get OPDS 2.0 JSON feeds at
the existing /opds URLs, and CBZ comics can be streamed page by page.
OPDS 1 is still the default.
- In the browser viewer, when you reach the end of a book you can rate it
and remove it from your offline books.

E-book viewer
- Search can now be limited to the current chapter.

calibredb (command line)
- New commands for notes (including full text search), annotations (list,
export and remove highlights and bookmarks), virtual libraries, the trash
bin (list, restore and permanently delete), and renaming or removing
items such as tags, authors and series.

Searching
- New relative date keywords: lastmonth, thisyear, lastyear, monthsago and
yearsago.

Get books
- New stores: Standard Ebooks, DOAB (Directory of Open Access Books) and
DOAJ (Directory of Open Access Journals).

Conversion
- EPUB output sets the language of every HTML file.
- Better PDF input: page numbers are detected more reliably and large
images are handled better.
- Fixes for DOCX index entries, KF8 input and damaged EPUB files.

Plus many smaller bug fixes and updated news sources.

only way i can see that error happening is if you have a custom archive.org plugin conflicting with the builtin one. Start calibre with

calibre --ignore-plugins

and remove that plugin and you should be fine.

I only see the one made by John Schember which I couldnt remove. I disabled it and Calibre started as normal.
