Firmware 6.0.276679

Firmware 6.0.276679 has been released.

The following appear to be new in the What's New list.
  • Prevent losing the following upon update to 6.0, or recover if you already updated to 6.0 (if your eReader has not been reset or signed out)
    • Reading stats
    • Previously-saved words from My Words (Beta)
  • Improve ability to preserve sideloaded books upon update to 6.0.
  • Address an issue that prevented some borrowed books and Kobo Plus books from being downloaded.
  • Improve “time remaining” estimates for books from Kobo’s catalog.
  • Improvements for sideloaded books are under investigation.
  • Improve stability of Adobe DRM book fulfillment.

Downloaded it just now. It doesn't seem any worse than the previous one, at least. Switching between four books wasn't bad, but one book with like 400 TOC entries is still slow to turn pages and switch chapters.

Let’s hope that this is groundwork for being able to sync side loaded books between Kobos, apps and computers.

I haven't seen any of the 6.0.xxx version listed on the kobo firmware page - https://pgaskin.net/KoboStuff/kobofirmware.html

Are these releases for kobo eReaders and if so - where can they be downloaded from?

They are releases for Kobo eReaders. If your device is registered in the EU, you will see an option under Accessibility. Outside the EU, I'm not certain what the procedure is, if there is one, for the bog standard end user.

Currently support is limited to 4 devices ( Libra Colour, Clara Colour, Clara BW and Elipsa 2E ).

in the eu you can get them while choosing accessibility options. Outside of the EU they did show a info on the home screen tu upgrade, but I think it was only to some users and I understand they want to up the number of (test) users step by step this way.

At this point in time they only let you update ota not download the firmware 6.x from their website

Does anybody know if the 6.x firmware can open LCP protected books?

As far as I understand it, the Tolinos can open LCP protected books, and the 5.x versions were those shared between Kobos and Tolinos. So I'm now wondering if that capability got rolled over to 6.x.

I wanted to try it out myself, but although my Kobo was bought and is registered in the EU, I don't see the "Accessibility" entry in the Settings menu.

Thanks in advance!

If you have an eBook with LCP, try it.

Hi,

Maybe I wasn't clear in my post. I don't have the 6.x firmware yet. I don't seem to have a way to download the 6.x firmware in my Kobo Libra Color, despite the fact that I'm in the EU, with an EU Kobo account. The "Accessibility" option does not show up in my menu.

I would try opening a LCP book myself if I had the 6.x firmware.

If the 6.x firmware is able to open LCP books, I'll try to figure out how to get it to my Libra Color. If it doesn't open LCP books, I won't bother. That's why I'm asking.

Thanks in advance if anyone has that info

LCP protected books can be opened since version 5.x.
There's a thread where I posted my results.

It's in Beta outside EU and seems semi-random. A couple weeks ago it gave me a pop up to join and I thought cool since I hadn't read anything on 6.0. This morning it finally did it and it was incredibly sluggish and it somewhat understandably broke my Calibre-Web setup (and all the books too). I ended up reverting after 15 minutes because of how slow it seemed. Needs a LOT more baking time.

Upon reverting it did try and get me to enroll again lol.

@rantanplan, thanks! I found the thread ("Nickelmenu on 5.x firmware", if anyone else decides to look for it), useful info there.

I managed to get the "Accessibility" option in my Settings menu at last, after a manual reset (the one in which you have to hold buttons). The regular factory reset did not work for that.

My Kobo was bought in an EU country and my account is also registered in an EU country, but the first account that logged in the device was not from the EU. I'm not sure if that somehow got saved in the device so that, no matter how many "soft" factory resets I did, the Accessibility option (and thus the ability to upgrade to 6.x firmware) did not show up. As said above, only after a "hard" factory reset and logging in with an EU Kobo account first made that option available.

Now I'm off to trying out 6.x. Thanks all!

UPDATE: Actually, something interesting happened. I updated the firmware all the way to the latest available (4.46.23836), and now the Accessibilily option is no longer visible. It was there in the previous firmware version (I was climbing up one by one since my hard reset). Maybe there are so many glitches that they removed the option to upgrade? In any case, I decided to wait a bit more until they roll it out to me through the official channels.

Accessibility is mandatory in the EU, so I guess this happened by mistake.
