When I see "replaceable AAA battery", in 2026, as in for the Kobo's one, that gives me shivers.

Okay, this is what I was looking for. In hindsight, I should have just asked for the installed firmware version

@dandaman and @Gormagon how do you know 5.20.1 is able to be jailbroken? What is the exploit?

You'd think so. But the battery cover on the Kobo remote is so hard to open I have to throw it hard onto the floor to get the cover off.

I wrote: "Yes, but you may have to wait until a jailbreak is functionable and available." which translates to "I'm sure someone someday will find a way to jailbreak the firmware of the (as of today) most recent Kindles". But, like I mentioned already, one should buy an open system anyway and that's not Kindle.

Maybe interesting in this context: https://blog.the-ebook-reader.com/20...mazon-account/

The answer should have been "I don't know" instead of yes.

The Vera jailbreak is unpatched on these Kindles. we have a functional jailbreak right now. DNSB is wrong, there is a working jailbreak for 5.20.1

Need this for my Kindle Colorsoft 2024!

I’m sure there are similar ones along the same lines. It’s clunkier, obviously, compared to what Amazon is floggng, but it works perfectly well and is a boatload of bucks cheaper than a new Kindle plus clicker!

I ordered a pink one and it arrives tomorrow. Will be using it on my Kindle 2024 colorsoft reader. I really love my Kindle colorsoft....except have been missing the buttons that my Oasis has. Really MISSED the buttons!

Can confirm. I updated and re-jailbroke my Scribe 2022 on 5.20.1 with Vera.

Odd. I haven't had to replace the battery in my Kobo Remote since I bought it as a Christmas gift for myself in December, 2025. I did open it to take a look at the battery when it first arrived. I put my thumb on the arrow marking on the battery cover for a bit more friction with the lanyard slot facing me, pulled the cover toward me and it slid open. No need for excessive force much less tossing it on the floor. I have trouble seeing how that would help much since the end of the battery cover is level with the end of the remote though the lanyard does give maybe a millimetre of space.

Interesting. The one person I know whose new Kindle updated to 5.20.1 during setup stated they were unable to jailbreak their device. Please note I am not referring to being able to re-establish an existing jailbreak but jailbreaking a device which has not previously been jailbroken.

Entirely possible that either they screwed up trying to use Vera or Vera is hit and miss on 5.20.1. "You pays your money, and you takes your choice".

It did take a few attempts to get Vera to take again on my 2022. I don't know if there's something about *making* the settings adjustments that introduces the vulnerability vs just having the theme already set to the ones the guide has you use. I was in there moving them around for the second and third attempts and something finally worked.

I could see myself with one of these new Kindles, particularly with the cover with page turn buttons. Maybe soon!
