Native Native EPUB support for Kindle

This package adds experimental native EPUB support for all devices from K4 onwards.

EPUBs should be placed in the usual /mnt/us/documents directory.

Install it with opkg or K2:

opkg install kindle-epub

After installing it, you will see a book called "Native EPUB" in your library. Open it. Your screen should flash a few times. Once this is done, you'll be able to read EPUB files

You'll need to press the book each time you reboot - this is a safety feature to prevent bricks.

Note: if you installed the beta MRPI based version, you should run the uninstaller MRPI package provided with that package.

Perhaps there is no need to use exact firmware versions, but only those that have internal changes (like webreader or libs)?

Tested on my old PW1 with firmware 5.6.1.1. It works. I was pleasantly surprised when I saw that indexing of epub book's text content was successfully done and that global search result list content from that test epub book.

My Kindle did have one forced reboot happen while re-opening that single epub book I've added for testing. Didn't find if and where your "handler" binaries log errors.

Tested on a KOA2 running 5.16.2.1.1 and it seems to be working fine. It was a bit surreal watching all the EPUB content that I normally only saw in the KOReader file manager populate into the stock UI.

Would it be possible to create a package for a DXG running 2.5.8 please?

I would doubt it since the DXG is rather limited. It basically a K2 with a larger screen.

Your device needs to have the specific firmware version listed installed for the package to work.

EPUBs should be placed in the usual /mnt/us/documents directory.

Native EPUB support is possible on later devices but it is not being released at present due to the need to build a new version against each new firmware.

This package has been tested against all device/firmware combos in the emulator and on live K4, KT3 and KT4 devices without issues.

That said, the usual risks apply - don't install this if you don't have a clear idea of how you can recover your device if anything goes wrong.

Source code to be released soon after I clean it up a bit.

I know that you have said that you will release the source code after you have cleaned it up. Do you think I would be able to use that to make something that would work on a Kindle DXG or perhaps a Kindle Keyboard model please?

Updated - it now works on almost all devices.

You should now use the kindle-epub package from opkg.

Uninstall the previous version before installing the opkg version using the MRPI uninstaller originally provided.
