.calnotes\retired\ folder
What exactly is this folder for? From name thought it was stuff from deleted category items but looking at the html files in there are active in my library.

Possibly something to do with recoverability, or new rubber on the wheels.

FWIW I added an exclusion to my FreefileSync job to NOT copy the .caltrash and .calnotes (the only annotations I make are things to fix on next connect)

Why bother? On Windows:

If you don't attach Notes to categories (i.e. Authors, Series, Tags, Publishers etc) .calnotes is 76K bytes, and if there's nothing in .caltrash it's 0 bytes - the MFT is pre-allocated; so directory entries come for free.

So bugger all savings space-wise, and even less time-wise and added configuration complication for each calibre library.

Because I would need to empty .caltrash. That is WHY I set the exclusion, I noticed appearing it while running FFS, and it was not a tiny flash.

I have Trash set to Clear 'on close'. That said, I suspect it only clears the current library - I should check that.

For my backup I excluded caltrash and the full text db but not calnotes.

I don't do 'on close' (for anything) because I want time to let 'That was dumb' move come to the surface
