The max_supported_fwversion does not seem to block any actions. The lines below which list the minimum FW version for various features are likely more important.

Considering the amounts of Tolino bits and bobs in the v6.0 schema, it would appear that Kobo is trying hard to get down to one firmware for both families.

I think it does:
Code:
if self.dbversion > self.supported_dbversion or self.is_supported_fwversion:
    # Unsupported database
    [...]
(But by now it's been fixed anyway, so max_supported_fwversion has been updated as well.)

I got an update prompt for this the other day on my Kobo Libra Color in the USA, chose not to update until its not a beta. Bought from Kobo and not tied to any other affiliate. I honestly thought it was just a 5.x release so my eyebrows raised when i saw the thread title.

Last edited by PatchyMimo; 09-25-2026 at 11:58 AM. Reason: its libre not libra? or is it libra

Oof. Users are also reporting data loss to the point that they've commented on it on social media.

I would not be pushing out this update to a broad audience... this really needs more time in the oven. I want to see the folks at Kobo succeed, really, but they're making it hard to defend this kind of stuff by releasing buggy software.

And then writing confusing/ambiguous social posts about how to handle it.

They've had plenty of time. Some of us have been living with 5.x for over two years..

FWIW, Kobo’s CEO has now posted a couple of threads on BlueSky explaining a bit more about the purpose of OS 6 and the beta release, and the issues they’re aware of and that are in the process of being fixed:

They should have been more open about all of the problems with 5.x or now OS 6 from the beginning. But not talking about the shortcomings and their plans at all wasn't smart at all and cost them a lot of good will.

Also the fact that there will likely be a split between devices running 4.38.x and OS 6 is sad but I expected as much at this point.

I understand the purpose of the release, what I don't understand is are why they actively push something that's definitely a work in progress to customers.

I guess they want to save some money so they decided to fire their QA and let their customers do the testing for them??

Tolino customers have been testing 5.x this for over 2 years –*and some issues that existed from the very beginning still haven't been fixed.

I’m sure there will be still some differences for the tolino e.g. the tolino cloud (were side loaded books can be stored too) and the stores of the tolino providers. If they do it in the same Major version probably only people working on it at kobo know. But im sure the will make it as unified as possible because it will be less work for them and the hardware of the newer devices is already the same internally.

Is there away to upgrade to OS 6 manually or provoke the request to upgrade? I found the link to the update, but it doesn't contain a tgz.

What do you mean exactly? Even running on the same firmware, there are many hooks that differ based on if the device uses
Code:
isTolino
or not. So technically it’s the same firmware that still behaves differently.

Since the link has been made public, some interesting items in the update file. Part of the update consists of named directories containing a kernel.img file where the directory name appears to be a Kobo device codename. Looking at the names, while we see condor, monza, spa-bw & spa-colour, we also see some older Kobo codenames such as nova, luna, io, etc.

Code:
condor Kobo Elipsa 2E N605
monza Kobo Libra Colour	N428, N428B
spa-bw Kobo Clara BW N365, N365B
spa-colour	Kobo Clara Colour	N367, N367B
spa-tpv-bw	Kobo Clara BW P365
nova Kobo Clara HD N249
goldfinch	Kobo Clara 2E N506
luna Kobo Nia N306
io Kobo Libra 2 N418
Also note that this link downloads the 6.0.279225 firmware
