Kobo software update causes KOReader to disappear

I have a Kobo Libre Color which I updated last night to software version
6.0.274403(8f62d14e95,9/18/26).

For me, this update has caused KOReader to completely vanish. I've tried reinstalling but it simply installs kfmon.png in /mnt/onboard and nothing else.

Connecting my Kobo to my Mac I can see all the KOReader files are still there but to Kobo they don't exist.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

KFmon gets nuked after update yes, use NickelMenu instead (uncomment a line in .apps/nm folder, IIRC)

Some people mentioned that the major release 6.x.x series is opt-in. Did you use "Early Access OS" by choice?

I did the update on my second device to test some things and i had to reinstal nickelmenu.

Especially this is possible since the 6.0 Version uses a new QT version so an old nickel menu install (which räderte up to 4.x releases) can’t work any longer with this new Kobo Software. It is necccessary to use the fork that exists for the 5.x and 6.x versions.

For normal incremental Kobo updates you tip is helping a lot.

I knew when i did it but it was like on the main page of the kobo a link to install it and it was not looking as explicit as I know it from other companies for beta tests, so for an inexperienced user it was like: For new update click here.

The thing is, when you get a major firmware update like 4.x to 6.0.x, then you should expect thing make to work on the 4.x firmware to most likely break. You need to make sure there's a version that works with the new firmware before you install it.

Version 5.18.x needs the specific v5 build of KOReader and Nico‘s fork of Nickelmenu.
