If I don't know someone's gender for certain I just refer as "they." Its been used for centuries.

Actually: no. Thee and Thou died as the singular "you" forms in the 1600s or so but continue in use for specialized purposes (like the King James bible); "They" as a singular, died somewhere in the 1700s.

I'm not objecting to the choice to recreate this meaning of "they" but to the suggestion that is was already used this way in "modern" standard English.

Thee and thou are no longer used in everyday speech and not even in most books or articles. It's an extremely rare occurrence these days to come across thee or thou (unless you regularly read the bible, of course). They as a singular might have died, but as a word it has been in use continuously to this day. Many words have different meanings now than they had a few decades or centuries ago.

Well, where I'm from, "they" is always used when one does not know a referenced person's sex or gender - and often even if one knows. Until recently, using it was never a point of contention.

@slm: So do you always say "she or he" repeatedly in conversation until you know the referenced person's sex or gender for sure?

"Someone told me Bob is quitting."

Do you then demand to know if the teller was a man or a woman? What if you're not told?
"Did she or he say when? How does she or he know?"

I've learned the singular use of they/them in school, referencing people that you don't the sex of. I'm certainly not 300 years old.

However, I accept that this might be a regional thing as we were obviously taught BE, not AE.

I can't use they. To me, that's a multiple. If you don't know someone's gender, what's good to use that's singular? They is not generic. It's specific.
