The 2000 usd starting price removes it from all consideration for me. With memory prices expected to remain high in this accursed decade, I am not sure I will ever be able to consider anything like this - I will hug my existing devices extra tight in the meantime . I admit the open/portrait mode with matte screen would be great for reading, were I made of money.

2000 is a high starting price and I'd have wanted 512 gb of memory instead of the base 256 gb, so it would have been 2200 or more. Cost wasn't my deciding factor against it, it was use case. It would have been a toy and I'd have been using the outer screen for daily things like phone calls, texts and quickly looking something up.

If it makes you feel any better it's €2.339 (that's $2700) here in EU for the basic version

Matte screen and reading was my first thought, too, but the price is even higher in my country

The matte screen sounds great for ebooks but the next Mini will cost more, have an OLED screen and a smaller bezel. If I had my druthers it would have a matte screen, a 1/16 wider bezel and cost less. Dream on.

True, but then I could save up by buying and driving around in an awesome Renault 4 EV and thus afford this excessively priced phone/device in no time at all .

Ah yes, Renault 4/5 e-tech are awesome and you could have one for the price of 13 basic or 10 1Tb iPhone Duos!

I went and picked up my 18 pro max Saturday. I'm glad to be back to that size. I had a 13 pro max and I thought I'd downsize and not carry that in my pocket (at the time I was also carrying a sep work phone as well). That turned out to be a mistake reading when away from the house without my reader although doable, wasn't very good and I had a hard time typing on it with my arthritic fingers without making mistakes all the time was difficult. Read some yesterday on it, and it was much improved, and typing was much improved.

I was also pleasantly surprised by iBooks. I'm considering reading The Count of Monte Cristo as my next book and downloaded it in iBooks. There are more adjustments like line spacing and margins than there used to be the last time I looked. I'll probably read that book with my iPad and phone while away from home.
