This does fix it. I sent a test book and when opening the device, the status and progress column shows it as a kobo epub, while the others are all vanilla epub.

In fact, when opening the new book to try it out, I was presented with an intro of five screens explaining the Aa menu items. This did not happen when the books were all epub.

Thanks for this information. I have done this, and I can't tell if I have Kepubs in my Kobo Clara BW. File Explorer on PC (Kobo connected) shows all epubs and no Kepubs.
Calibre's "On Device" column shows both epub and Kepub formats in the Kobo because in the past I had been converting to Kepub and sending to device.
It may not be too important since I have no complaint when reading in Kobo, but I'm curious.

There are two ways to tell.

First, if you look at the book list in My Books on your Kobo, there is KOBO EPUB listed as the format with kepubs, and just EPUB with epubs.

Second, if you look at your books in the File Explorer, kepubs have the extension .kepub.epub, while epubs have just .epub. You may have to enable displaying file extensions in the Explorer, they might be off by default.
