I Found a Really Good use for AI

When I cannot find a good enough quality cover image at a high enough resolution. As long as I can find a cover image large enough, I can have AI make it larger so it looks good and it large enough. That works very well.

This is it the image I started with.

I am curious if AI is doing any of the hard work. Is it just interpreting your prompt and then using some non-AI tool to do the work?

I can't say. But whatever is going on, the improvement is there.

There is a frame from an old episode of Doctor who in 4:3 and pretty poor quality.

Unfortunately, the AI has mis-interpreted the picture, and interpreted the eyes as highlights on hair, and the throat wattles as a large eye. That's a Sea Devil from the Jon Pertwee era.

Very true. You would need human intervention to make sure the AI got it correct.

Yeah, I was wondering about the hairdo and that I didn’t remember the original Sea Devils looking like that…

Discussions of the ethics of AI usage due to environmental issues and all that aside, purely from a practical point of view I do see that AI tools in their current state can be helpful with upscaling if the original image is e.g. small but clear and detailed. It’s where AI has to start inventing detail that it can go quite spectacularly wrong.

If you're talking about the Doctor Who image you shared, then how have you missed the part about AI "upscaling" a monster into a man? Certainly even you can admit that is an issue?

Your cover image upscaled fine because nothing needed to be invented/interpreted You could have done the same tweaks with the GIMP.
