I Found a Really Good use for AI
When I cannot find a good enough quality cover image at a high enough resolution. As long as I can find a cover image large enough, I can have AI make it larger so it looks good and it large enough. That works very well.
This is it the image I started with. The is the AI upscaled version |

Thanks. The new cover looks really good vs the one I started with. Sometimes with older books, it can be rather difficult to find a proper cover image. So I gave AI a try and it worked.
The other thing I tried with AI that worked well. I took a frame from Star Trek: The Next Generation and a frame from The Simpsons. Both in 4:3. I asked AI to change it to 16:9 by adding to the left/right sides and both worked very well. You would not know they they were not shot/drawn that way. Another thing AI can do well is upscale TV programs/movies that are still popular enough in SD to full HD while keeping the original aspect ratio. Ones that were not shot on film. |

There is a frame from an old episode of Doctor who in 4:3 and pretty poor quality. Here is the AI cleaned up version. |

You mean I'll finally be able to do this with AI?

And I'm also thinking increasing the resolution/clarity of some images such as maps.

![]() Discussions of the ethics of AI usage due to environmental issues and all that aside, purely from a practical point of view I do see that AI tools in their current state can be helpful with upscaling if the original image is e.g. small but clear and detailed. It’s where AI has to start inventing detail that it can go quite spectacularly wrong. |

The book cover I upscaled had no issues.

If you're talking about the Doctor Who image you shared, then how have you missed the part about AI "upscaling" a monster into a man? Certainly even you can admit that is an issue?
Your cover image upscaled fine because nothing needed to be invented/interpreted You could have done the same tweaks with the GIMP. Last edited by DiapDealer; Today at 02:19 PM. |
