Many thanks, that worked great. New books downloaded, no firmware upgrade, and it still works with Calibre.

Good God, the cat-and-mouse with Amazon to stop them from forcibly updating our devices is ridiculous.

If this method catches on, I half expect Amazon will start forcibly deploying firmware updates via diff patches.

Probably not, but... I already have three Kindle Paperwhites - all now essentially decommissioned by Bezos. I used one to download Kindle Unlimited books and then transferred those from that one to my two offline PWs through calibre. I'm not giving them any more money for another Kindle when there was no reason to discontinue support for the old ones other than greed.

We have a Kindle Fire. Is it possible to download ebooks from KU to that and then deDRM them either on that or through calibre?

I did a quick search here, but either don't know what keywords to use or it hasn't been mentioned. Most likely the former.

Fire tablets cannot be used to deDRM books.

In order to remove DRM from Kindle eBooks, the first thing you need is a computer with Windows 11.

Why? I've been running calibre under linux for years and so far, that's been working to deDRM everything I've downloaded. I just need to get the books TO that computer somehow.

No. That is, you can transfer them, but they'll be DRMed and unreadable on anything else. It's possible to remove the DRM with the Windows Kindle app, but not on Linux.

Because basically the only way to remove the Kindle DRM now is via the Windows app.

The new Windows Store Kindle app is Windows 11 only and that's what you need to download Kindle eBooks and the software to help with sorting the DRM only works with the Windows version of Kindle.

If your Linux Laptop can run Windows 11, then you'll need to install Windows 11 if you want to remove DRM from Kindle eBooks.

One acquaintance of mine is using a Windows 11 virtual machine on their Linux box to download and remove DRM from Amazon ebooks. Once the books have been downloaded and DRMmed, they are transferred to the Linux side and imported into calibre.

Does the new Kindle app need a TPM chip?

The VM's hypervisor fakes the TPM chip. It does require a password before you can open the VM. We are both using VMWare Workstation Pro (me since I've used it for years, them since it is a freebie from Broadcom/VMware). You do need to set up a free account.
