Not everyone knows where to get a good copy of these stories/books. Not everyone could fix things from Project Gutenberg. StandardEBooks eBooks do not work with n older RMSDK, so that's Kobo, Sony, Nook, and others (they could work if they deleted @media from CSS for the compatible version which isn't compatible).

So for some, it's just easier to pay the $0.99 to get these stories/books already in a collection.

Jon, would you quit repeating that fable about Standard eBooks and RMSDK especially as it relates to Nook and Kobo.

I downloaded H. Beam Piper's Little Fuzzy from Standard eBooks and copied it unaltered to my Kobo Sage. Scrolling through the first 5 chapters, I could not see any issues due to the CSS. Chapter headers? Font size, weight and positioning just fine. First paragraphs? No indent. Subsequent paragraphs? 1em indent. Scene break image? Centred with top/bottom margins. Heck, even their invert images in dark mode works with Kobo's version of RMSDK. Yes, they have ePub3 only epub:type=, role= and other bits and bobs in the text. Again, RMSDK disregards them.

Yes, they have some special case stuff for Nooks, Apple Books, etc. None of those seem to trigger RMSDK into seeing an error in the stylesheet. RMSDK does what it designed to do when it runs into correctly formatted but unknown items in a stylesheet and disregards them.

Yes, when I have justification off, the pages show as left justified. My preference so I'm happy with that.

Not With a Bang by Temi Oh is £2 in the UK (Kobo, Amazon)
Quote:
‘Our father had imagined the end of the world so often that, for a while, he believed that he summoned it…’

The Minton family is in crisis. After losing his job, Marcus begins stockpiling cans, running evacuation drills and digging a doomsday bunker in the back garden. At the same time, his daughters are unravelling in their own ways – Chantale is being haunted by dreams of disaster, and Briar’s obsession with a missing classmate draws her deeper into the seductive world of a UFO cult. Meanwhile, no one is aware of the devastating diagnosis their mother has been desperately trying to keep hidden.

Then, on the morning of the eldest daughter’s wedding, an extinction-level event tears the world apart, and the Mintons must fight their way through a devastated city – back to safety, survival, and each other.

Evocation (Summoner's Circle #1) by S.T. Gibson is $2 in the US (Amazon only, but price-matchable on Kobo)
Quote:
The Devil knows your name, David Aristarkhov.

As a teen, David Aristarkhov was a psychic prodigy, operating under the shadow of his oppressive occultist father. Now, years after his father’s death and rapidly approaching his thirtieth birthday, he is content with the high-powered life he’s curated as a Boston attorney, moonlighting as a powerful medium for his secret society.

But with power comes a price, and the Devil has come to collect on an ancestral deal. David’s days are numbered, and death looms at his door.

Reluctantly, he reaches out to the only person he’s ever trusted, his ex-boyfriend and secret Society rival Rhys, for help. However, the only way to get to Rhys is through his wife, Moira. Thrust into each other’s care, emotions once buried deep resurface, and the trio race to figure out their feelings for one another before the Devil steals David away for good…

The first book in a spellbinding and vibrant new series from The Sunday Times bestselling author of A Dowry of Blood.

Would be very interested in sampling them, but since Amazon removed all viable paths towards removing the DRM on their books, and took the added step of bricking my Kindle 4th Gen...I don't think I'm going to give them my money for this.

Check your library. If your library supports Overdrive, you may have access to these eBooks in ePub.

Most viable paths. Not quite all. But agree with not buying from Amazon anyway. Might check my library as JSWolf suggested.

I previewed the first chapter. Not my cup of tea, but I will try to get through the book, despite it being slammed by critics, and some questionable ableist humor in the first one (that might improve in later books.) People are very puzzled about why it was nominated for this year's Clarke's awards.

Removing DRM definitely still works, but the methods keep changing

Good recommendation. My library has 66 copies (!) of the first in the series. Borrowed it.
