Biting the Sun by Tanith Lee is $5 in the US (Kobo, Amazon)
Omnibus of Don't Bite the Sun and Drinking Sapphire Wine.
Quote:
In a world dedicated to pleasure, one young rebel sets out on a forbidden quest. Published for the first time in a single volume, Tanith Lee's duet of novels set in a hedonistic Utopia are as riveting and revolutionary as they were when they first appeared two decades ago.

It's a perfect existence, a world in which no pleasure is off-limits, no risk is too dangerous, and no responsibilities can cramp your style. Not if you're Jang: a caste of libertine teenagers in the city of Four BEE. But when you're expected to make trouble—when you can kill yourself on a whim and return in another body, when you're encouraged to change genders at will and experience whatever you desire—you've got no reason to rebel . . . until making love and raising hell, daring death and running wild just leave you cold and empty.

Ravenous for true adventures of the mind and body, desperate to find some meaning, one restless spirit finally bucks the system—and by shattering the rules, strikes at the very heart of a soulless society. . . .

He and Tor have the rights to Redshirts. So that is legal to allow the DRM to be removed.

I suspect it's still possible that the lawyers of the parent company Macmillan might disgree.

The Book of Magic by edited by Gardner Dozois is $5 in the US (Kobo, Amazon)

Some of these stories have since been published elsewhere. Check the ISFDB listing. Widow Maker, for example, is getting a new publication later this year as part of Guns and Sorcery.

Quote:
A new anthology celebrating the witches and sorcerers of epic fantasy—featuring stories by George R. R. Martin, Scott Lynch, Megan Lindholm, and many others!

Hot on the heels of Gardner Dozois’s acclaimed anthology The Book of Swords comes this companion volume devoted to magic. How could it be otherwise? For every Frodo, there is a Gandalf . . . and a Saruman. For every Dorothy, a Glinda . . . and a Wicked Witch of the West. What would Harry Potter be without Albus Dumbledore . . . and Severus Snape? Figures of wisdom and power, possessing arcane, often forbidden knowledge, wizards and sorcerers are shaped—or misshaped—by the potent magic they seek to wield. Yet though their abilities may be godlike, these men and women remain human—some might say all too human. Such is their curse. And their glory.

In these pages, seventeen of today’s top fantasy writers—including award-winners Elizabeth Bear, John Crowley, Kate Elliott, K. J. Parker, Tim Powers, and Liz Williams—cast wondrous spells that thrillingly evoke the mysterious, awesome, and at times downright terrifying worlds where magic reigns supreme: worlds as far away as forever, and as near as next door.

FEATURING SIXTEEN ALL-NEW STORIES:

“The Return of the Pig” by K. J. Parker
“Community Service” by Megan Lindholm
“Flint and Mirror” by John Crowley
“The Friends of Masquelayne the Incomparable” by Matthew Hughes
“The Biography of a Bouncing Boy Terror: Chapter Two: Jumping Jack in Love” by Ysabeau S. Wilce
“Song of Fire” by Rachel Pollack
“Loft the Sorcerer” by Eleanor Arnason
“The Governor” by Tim Powers
“Sungrazer” by Liz Williams
“The Staff in the Stone” by Garth Nix
“No Work of Mine” by Elizabeth Bear
“Widow Maker” by Lavie Tidhar
“The Wolf and the Manticore” by Greg Van Eekhout
“The Devil’s Whatever” by Andy Duncan
“Bloom” by Kate Elliott
“The Fall and Rise of the House of the Wizard Malkuril” by Scott Lynch

**Plus George R. R. Martin’s classic story “A Night at the Tarn House” and an introduction by Gardner Dozois

You should read 17 U.S. Code § 1201.

But it says nothing about when the copyright holder(s) give permission for the DRM to be removed.

Exactly. The copyright owners saying, "this is how you remove the DRM from this book," is not a qualifying exemption under Section 1201. You won't be punished for it because Tor and Scalzi promised not to sue, but it still is illegal.

Besides, the government has no right to say that Tor cannot tell people it's OK to remove DRM from their eBooks.

Truckers (The Bromeliad #1) by Terry Pratchett is £1 in the UK (Kobo, Amazon)
For children.
Quote:
'Outside! What's it like?'

Masklin looked blank.

'Well,' he said. 'It's sort of big-'

To the thousands of the tiny nomes who live under the floorboards of a large department store, there is no Outside. Things like Day and Night, Sun and Rain are just daft old legends.

Then a devastating piece of news shatters their existence: the Store - their whole world - is to be demolished. And it's up to Maskin, one of the last nomes to come into the Store, to mastermind an unbelievable escape plan that will take all the nomes into the dangers of the great Outside ...

The first title in the magnificent trilogy, The Bromeliad.

Let me rephrase. Technically, you may be correct. That said, Tor telling people it's OK to remove DRM from their eBooks does not make it legal to actually do it.

No longer necessary.

Here's a possible alternate solution:

Hyperion - Dan Simmons. Special price at Kobo.uk - £0.99

https://www.kobo.com/gb/en/ebook/hyperion-2

ADDED: There are also additional SF and Fantasy deals on Kobo.UK, in addition to various websites throughout the world. Please feel free to add any special deals after my post that may be relevant to this thread.

Last edited by Dr. Drib; 07-05-2026 at 01:19 PM. Reason: better to possible alternate

Tanith Lee Humble bundle

Hi,
I am posting this about the Tanith Lee bundle at humble bundle.
I have no clue if its US only or not.
Only reason I posted is that I don't remember reading anything by her and would like any feedback on her books.
If this has already been posted I am sure I hear about it.

I suspect US only as they are from DAW. However, have VPN & Paypal, will travel...

In terms of her books, they aren't to everyone's taste. Lee was a British author, so touched on themes that would have horrified many mainstream readers, including much sexual ambiguity. Think of it in terms of comics: Lee would have been Heavy Metal to DC or Marvel.

I personally like her writing; she's not as precious as Storm Constantine (who I got bored with). She was in much of the same vein as Angela Carter and Jane Gaskell.
