renameotabin and factory reset on 5.18.0.2

Hi,

i have a brand new Kindle Colorsoft (5.18.0.2) and was following all steps on https://kindlemodding.org/jailbreaking/WinterBreak/. Everything went fine until i tried starting Kual. I assumed that the JB did not work despite seeing the file JAILBREAK in my Library. So I followed the guide to factory reset the device. Unfortunately I previously performed renameotabin and I only latter saw the warning on https://kindlemodding.org/jailbreaki...m-a-reset.html.

So I am stuck in the startup while the Kindle tries to download/update. Nothing helps and I do not find the firmware 5.18.0.2 to download.

Did I really messed up and need to update to a newer version (without having the option to JB)? Or is there another way to bypass the screen?

Rebooting after copying restore.sh from the renameotabin.zip and renaming it to emergency.sh in the root directory of the kindle worked and I was able to start again.

A quick update for future reference and people who also struggle with the Kindle Colorsoft JB and the current version of kindlemodding guide.

1. Start with the mentioned way to install Winterbreak (https://kindlemodding.org/jailbreaking/WinterBreak/)
2. Install the hotfix - I used 2.3.7 instead of the linked version (https://github.com/KindleModding/Hot...ses/tag/v2.3.7)
3. Install MRPI from https://kindlemodding.org/jailbreaki...ing-kual-mrpi/ but do not use PEKI (there are some problems with the key signatures - https://github.com/KindleTweaks/PEKI/issues/10).
4. Use the coplate version from KUAL from https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=225030

Continue with https://kindlemodding.org/jailbreaki...sable-ota.html and whatever follows.

Better still might be to use the new Sanctuary jailbreak. It works on any Kindle running 5.16.4 to 5.18.3. It uses the new jb.sh that includes the hotfix, OTA block, and a new package manager so that you don't need to worry about manually installing all the parts.

You would still end up with the same problem in same circumstances : if you do a factory reset without remembering to first undo OTA rename you will not be able to advance past that forced firmware update check that exists on 12th gen Kindles.

What makes Sanctuary better then Winterbreak 2?

Winterbreak 2 has never applied to the Kindle Colorsoft. Sanctuary works on completely different firmware ranges.

Thanks for that. I cannot use Sanctuary on my PW3 when I finally decide to jailbreak it. I'll have to use Winterbreak 2.
