They stopped showing "simultaneous device usage: unlimited" way back in January at the same time that epub/pdf downloads became available. They only dropped the final method to reliably get new books in mobi/kf8 by cutting off the old Kindles last month.

So if I were to upgrade to a new kindle later I will lose any books because of DRM?

You won't lose any books in the sense that they won't disappear from your Amazon account and you'll still be able to read them with a Kindle or a Kindle app. What we're discussing here is removing the DRM with deDRM tools and calibre, for the purpose of reading them on a non-Amazon device or making a personal back-up copy. As you can't do it without a PC, you're presumably not doing it anyway.

In theory, you can remove the DRM on the Kindle itself without needing a computer. You do need a jailbroken Kindle to make this work.

I don't want Amazon epubs. They're poor quality and have all embedded fonts removed, for example. And sometimes you'll get pdf instead of epub. I prefer to remove the DRM from regular Kindle books or not to buy from Amazon at all.
If Amazon provided the original epub file instead of a sloppy conversion or, worse, pdf, I would love it, and do my part in supporting it. But they don't. |

I came across my first book that lists Kindle for PC support but won't download to the new Kindle for Windows app, throwing up an error that it's not supported on this device. I wonder why that is. I'd use the old app except it would no longer open after updating from 2.8.0 to 2.9.1.

Interesting. I tried a sample and it downloaded on K4PC 2.9.1 but, as you mentioned, on Kindle for Windows, it is not supported. OTOH, I also found it a bit weird that Kindle for Windows shows up under devices not apps on Amazon's site. |

From what I can tell support for KF8 format has been removed from the new Windows app, making that book unavailable on that platform. Perhaps that is something Amazon is planning for the other Kindle apps and devices. Is so then I would expect a KFX version of that book and similar ones to become available soon.
