Calibre unexpectedly creates multiple directories on my kobo

Hi all,

I try to transfer my books to a folder ebooks on my kobo clara bw. For that I have configured the driver in kobo utilities plugin like: ebooks/{title} - {authors}

For testing I used 3 files to upload, of which one consistently lands in a folder "ebks" on the kobo. This letter gobbling also occurs on a seriesname when using a template like ebooks/{series}/{title} - {authors}

The title is "Prescription Alternatives:Hundreds of Safe, Natural, Prescription Free Remedies to Restore and Maintain Your Health, Fourth Edition"

When I change the title to "foo" the results is a expected.

I am at a loss now and I hope that some kind soul can help me with this possibly rookie question.

Thanks, Mark

When you customize plugin for the KoboTouch plugin, your save template goes at the bottom of the Fie formats tab. mine is set to
Code:
books/{author} - {series} {series_index:0>2s|| - } {title}
To get to the KoboTouch plugin, go to Preferences > Plugins and search for KoboTouch.

What version of calibre are you using and what OS?

Thanks for the quick response and for pointing me to the kobo touch plugin. Using the proposed template calibre still sends the same book to "boks" instead of books

I have mapped calibre series column to kobo's collection, so my ideal structure would be like ebooks/bookcategorie/author-title. This way I could use both the standard reader as well as koboreader.

The best I can do right now is use ebooks/{series}/{title} as template. Both readers will show the metadata including title & author.

I use Calibre 9.9 on Linux

This is why you have multiple directories. You are using series as another directory.

Yes, I want to use series as a directory. It will have values like biography, history etc so these will be recognized on the kobo as collections.

The -for me- weird thing is that from the three book I mentioned in my initial post and using your suggestion 2 of them end up in the expected "books" directory and 1 in a "boks" directory. This is consistent behavior.

Do not use series as collections because series needs to have a number. Create a new text column for collections.

The issue is that calibre will truncate file & directory name to restrict the total path length. For Windows, MAX_PATH defaults to 260 characters. Unlike NTFS, where you can increase that value, the FAT32 partition max_path on your Kobo is not extensible.

The template I use is:

Ebooks/{author_sort:sublist(0,1,&)}/{title} - {authors:sublist(0,1,&)}

where the sublist(0,1,&) restricts the author sort and name to the first entry in the list.

For your horrid example, when I import the book to calibre, I would use "Prescription Alternatives" as the book title and then place "Hundreds of Safe, Natural, Prescription Free Remedies to Restore and Maintain Your Health, Fourth Edition" in the subtitle field.

I don't bother adding the series name/index to the template since after sending the books to my Kobo and then reconnecting, the series/index is sent to the Kobo as part of the metadata though since you also use KOReader, you might find it easier. My personal choice with KOReader is to enable it's calibre metadata search and not bother with worrying about directory structure.

Thanks for your valuable suggestions. I didn't t realize the limitations of the used filesystem.
And you are right: the example was horrid.
