Curious - where is the AI opt-in setting?

No clue. That's part of what makes worrying about this opt-in only feature a bit silly. You really have to want to use it to use it.

I find the Calibre Help file a bit thin on AI config and use.
(IMHO Good Manuals and help are more difficult than the code they document ) |

Which even further supports the notion that one has to really WANT to use it to configure and use it.
![]() People are conflating the plugins being enabled by default with AI being enabled by default, by the way. AI features are still completely opt-in by default. No manual configuration, no AI. Period. Last edited by DiapDealer; 06-14-2026 at 10:07 AM. |

But, but, but AI. What if it became sentient and opted in itself? Then what, smart guys?

It also worth to mentioning the tweak "Hide ai features" that will completly hide any mention of them "Preference > Tweaks"
Is not a "full disable", but hey, since you can no longer trigger it in any kind even if you don't configur it, is similar. |

For the true believers, hiding it won't fix the problem.

When Calibre introduced a new feature - cover browser - I have tried (and even succeeded) to create a private fork with the button (NOT the functionality, mind you, just the button) hidden so I do not click on it by mistake and trigger a page-count run on my entire Calibre Library. It was a highly non-trivial undertaking.
Just compiling a working version of Calibre, without any changes to the source code, when you get the sources and install all necessary infrastructure is a lot of work. See https://manual.calibre-ebook.com/develop.html I have avoided the compiling part and "only" modified a few python sources that [the compiled and installed] Calibre runs. Oh ... by the way ... I was only able to do that with a lot of help from an AI ;-). And you do not need to purchase tokens from Claude Code or similar tool that would study sources on your computer (as one would have to do for any non-free software). Any random AI is already familiar with the source code of Calibre as it was trained on it, or at least on older version of it (alongside hundreds of millions of other texts and pieces of open-source software available on the net) One more thing. I do not think that you need to compile a separate version with the infrastructure for AI disabled. You can not connect to AI by miss-clicking somewhere in Calibre unwittingly. You would have to enable and configure it and tell it what AI to connect to. |
