One thing to note about a scooter is that because it's larger then a wheelchair, it won't fit in some stores when you go shopping unless you park outside before you go in.

If you need a cane, a Hurry Cane is really good. It folds, has three feet, can stand on it's own, and be height adjusted. I have one I used when I needed it because of my hip.

Yes, "Best Before" is guidance, "Use Before" should be obeyed. At least in the UK.

Pretty much the same in Canada. Though for most stuff, please don't use the "sniff test".

If it was me, I'd leave food as long as the best before date is less then 5 days past the date.

Canada doesn't have the accessibility laws of the US, so there's lots of places in my town I couldn't get the wheelchair - just one step, narrow doorways, etc.

I use a quad-cane already, but it's not compensating so well anymore and comes with own set of problems such as shoulder bursitis and having only one hand to carry things with.

Carrying was difficult. I could only carry a limited amount and if it was too heavy not at all.

That's not good not having ways to get a wheelchair places you should be able to go.

Amazon - books I've bought

I am seeing more and more that books I've bought (actually freebies bought for $0.00) are showing up on product pages without the green read now button. Instead, the orange buy with 1-click is there with a notation that I bought the book on such and such a day.

I think this must be related to the KFX-ZIP thing that cannot currently be deDRMed,

That means you've already bought those eBooks. It has nothing to do with DRM/KFX-ZIP.

It looks like someone tried to break in last night. Or at least tested the locks on our front door. When I went to run errands this morning and locked the door I noticed a gray stripe on the doorjamb and a little dent on the end, as if they tried wedging something metallic in between the jamb and the door (and failed, there's no mark on the door itself).

We have a good lock, when you deadbolt it bolts come out at the top, bottom and middle of the door. The same lock is on the back door and the garden gate.

Tomorrow the gardener is coming to do some work and he planned to start at 7am, too early for my sister to be up. She had planned on unlocking the garden gate tonight so he can come in tomorrow morning. But I think we better not. I have work tomorrow so I'll be up early and will unlock the gate before I head out to work. We just need to leave a note for me to remember somewhere I will see it tomorrow morning.

Good on you for having good locks! Just remember to think about exactly where the weakest point is in the entire door/jam/lock assembly. It's no good having great locks in a cheap wooden door that someone can just kick in. Or a flimsy door jam that splinters. Etc., etc. So some thought about just how you would go about defeating the lock is worth the time and thought.

Also a guy that worked in Chubb said another mistake is frames not sufficiently anchored to the wall.

Other mistakes are a combo letter box and lock. The thief uses a child to reach in and open a lock that's not dead locked.

Our insurance now explicitly states (clearly not fine print) that all exterior doors must have deadlocks and these must be used if the house has no-one in it. A favourite trick used to be to break in at the rear and boldly carry everything out the front into a big van. Can't be done if the doors are deadlocked.

Of course uPVC doors can be attacked with a glass blow torch, OTOH there are now battery operated angle grinders and circular saws making vans and wood doors vulnerable.

We have good quality door jam and a thick door. We do have thumb locks on the inside of the front and back door for fire safety. But because of it's design it's difficult to open by sticking something through the letterbox. We plan on blocking off the letterbox anyway since we have a package/letter box outside which is what the mailman has been using since we got it.

Lately I've seen several messages that there are people going around our neighbourhood checking out cars. Also in December last year someone was going around stealing doormats people had outside their door.

We never deadlock the doors when any of us are inside, and then the handle works. The outdoor handle is only used with the key to open, or push up and reverse key to deadlock.
