Error: "Failed to connect to port 9090. Try a different value."
About a week or two ago, immediately on calibre launch, I started getting this:
ERROR: Problem starting the wireless device: The wireless device driver had problems starting. It said "Failed to connect to port 9090. Try a different value." A Google/AI search led me to try changing the port to 9091, which worked for a while, but now I'm getting the message "Failed to connect to port 9091". So, right now, I changed the port back to 9090, and it worked again, but on calibre relaunch, I immediately get "Failed to connect to port 9090" again. Strangely, when I then change it back to 9091 I again get the error, and when I then AGAIN change it to 9090, it then DOESN'T work, i.e. error again, so it appears to have been a fluke or something that 9090 worked for me again just two minutes ago. Anyone know what might be up and/or a remedy? I'm on calibre, version 9.2.0. Thank you in advance for any time taken to respond. |

That typically happens when something on your machine usually antivirus/firewall is blocking calibre, try excluding calibre.exe from such programs.

Thanks for replying Kovid.
But both "the main calibre program" and "calibre worker process" are set to be Allowed in Norton365's Smart Firewall Program Controls, but I still encounter the issue. Also completely disabled Norton Auto-Protect & Smart Firewall but to no avail. I haven't recently changed settings in Norton so I really don't know what's up. |

It also means another program has that port open. More than likely one of the calibre worker processes is hung and did not close properly.
If on Windows take a look at SysInternals tool ProcessExplorer to double check that all calibre processes have been terminated. Sent from my Pixel 9a using Tapatalk |

Downloaded ProcessExplorer yesterday, but on running it found that the wireless device driver in calibre had started correctly of its own accord. This morning too the wireless device driver has launched as normal without error or need for intervention. So, tentatively, the problem seems to have righted itself. Hope the error doesn't occur again, but if it does I'll first use ProcessExplorer or TCPview to try to glean insight about calibre processes that may still be running.

Also, when my Norton came up for renewal recently, they (at my request/negotiation) offered a very heavily discounted renewal deal to retain me, so there's that too. Last edited by Mob201503; Yesterday at 08:59 AM. |

Norton was great when Peter was at the helm. Then he sold to those Yellow box folk whose marketing method is F-U-D. (They also bought Life Lock and others that might have been really useful at the time) Friends do not let friends use these once great products. BTW just try and uninstall these COMPLETELY and see that there is always a remnant left in place. |

If one were to go the road of uninstallation, uninstalling via the likes of Revo Uninstaller (rather than just Norton's own uninstaller or Window's) would however ensure complete remnant-free removal though, no?

I did use a Linux Live CD to access and delete (hidden) files I found. But that was years ago (XP days). |
