Moon+ Reader - ads
Is there any way to remove adds from the Moon+ eReader. I find them particularly annoying but I do not see any purchase option that will remove them. Am I missing something? Or are the ads permanent?

I don't use moonreader but I do use other free apps on Android plus Netguard (a software firewall als VPN) and I don't see any ads in these apps, since I don't allow these apps in Netguard to use the internet.
Have you tried using a firewall like Netguard? If you download netguard from F-Droid (or github) you can use ad-blocking lists as well which will work for all apps then. This feature is, as far as I know, not available for Netguard from the aurora/google store. |

As it turns out I did find the answer to my original question. I was looking for an upgrade link in the app and there apparently isn't one, but there is a completely different Pro version in the Play Store and I guess that is how they expect you to upgrade. |

My copy of ad-free Moon+ from Google Play is named Moon+ Reader Pro. I bought my copy many years ago but the latest version, 10.3, is very recent - 18th Dec 2025.

Wasn't it Moon+ that had issues with reading offline - when no internet is available - due to their authentication of paid users via Googles Play Store? It wasn't an always problem, only a sometimes problem. I seem to recall that there was a problem like this that stopped me from upgrading to the paid version. IIRC, the free version does not have this issue (since it doesn't have to authenticate paid users). I also seem to recall that the Moon+ developers said, "You can talk to Google about that, we're not to blame". Not a customer friendly position to take.
Anyway, I hope it is indeed Moon+ that has/had this issue because I don't want to smear them accidentally because of my poor memory. It is one of the apps I have on my smart phone that was affected by this. I'm pretty sure it was Moon+. |

So my "upgrade" to the paid version will be on indefinite hold until that issue is corrected in Moon+, if it ever is. Luckily, 99% of my reading is on my Kindle - my Android phone is only used for reading in emergencies when my Kindle is not available. But I agree that Moon+ is a nice application. Maybe a bit complex because it has more features and configuration than most would ever need or ask for. But once you get it set up the way you like, the complexity mostly fades away once you're just reading with it, and not configuring it. |

When does this problem show itself? I must admit I usually use KOReader these days when I read on my phone, but just to test I switched off Wi-Fi/mobile data and opened an epub (stored locally on the phone) with Moon+ Pro. It opened with no problem and I'm able to page through it OK.

Unfortunately, I don't remember. I never experienced it myself (I still use the free version of Moon+). I read about it somewhere. I remember discussion about the Google authentication supposedly having support for offline use, but there was a bug or maybe some length of time you have to be offline or some other issue that made the problem intermittent. I'm sorry that I don't remember more. I would have thought I read about this here, on this forum, but I did a quick search and didn't see the thread I was halfway remembering.

Inconclusive, then. It sounds like only someone who uses the Pro version regularly and for long sessions could give a definitive answer about how reliably it works offline in 2026.

I bought Moon Pro back in 2013 for HK$38,70. Superb deal.

I've been using it for years (the paid version) without any problems.

For phone use, this online authentication might be almost OK. I know that my phone has internet connection 99% of the time. If not via WiFi, then via cellular data.
My tablet is a different story. It is WiFi only. And I don't usually log it in to whatever public WiFi I find around me. And for security reasons, when logging in to public WiFi, I always have it connect to my VPN server running at home. That would be a bit of a hassle to go through every time I want to read a few minutes of a book when I don't have my Kindle. So Moon+'s authentication would probably never be noticed on my phone, but would potentially be a problem on my tablet. My take is that since I rarely use Moon+ - only when I don't have a better option (my Kindle) with me - then for those infrequent times I would rather put up with whatever ads the free version hands me than potentially end up stuck not being able to read due to authentication issues. Even though I only have probably a 1% chance of running into those authentication issues on my phone. It would be different if I routinely wandered outside of cell coverage areas. But I rarely do that. And when I do, it's usually a planned/known event, and for those, I will have taken my Kindle (and battery power banks) with me anyways. So I guess in the end, I would probably be happy enough with the paid version. But I don't like the potential of an outage simply on principle - I just think that's poor design, even if it only infrequently happens. |

If I may ask: What is the benefit from Moon+ to KOReader?
