@jackie_w: I cannot replicate that, changing the position setting always takes effect for me. Though I tried with only a single rule not multiple ones, butI I dont see how that matters.

I think there's something about changing rule(s) which is key to the problem starting. Try the following:

1. Open calibre 8.99.11. Go to bookshelf Settings>Emblems and remove all emblem rules. Restart calibre. At this point everything about bookshelf emblems should be disabled.
   
2. Go to bookshelf Settings>Emblems. Add 1 new rule, set for any position, then Apply. Everything looks OK, correct books have emblems showing in the correct selected position.
   
3. Go back into Settings>Emblems (without restarting calibre) and try to change emblem position - nothing else - Apply. The emblems do not change position.

After restarting calibre the problem no longer exists and step 3 works correctly every time. My conclusion is that something about adding/changing the rule(s) is triggering the problem.

I can reproduct it too.
This also occurs with the "Show emblems" check box on the grid view.

EDIT: found the bug and send a PR to fix it.
EDIT2: Ah seem to be the top of more issue, Kovid work on it.

un_pogaz or Kovid, I have a question. I understand that when using emblem in the shelf view, I should choose which rule to use and position it first; that's what I've been trying.

But in the cover grid view, more than one rule appears under emblem.

I'm guessing that the shelf view only accepts one emblem.
I deduce that the shelf view would only accept one emblem, which is obviously due to the allocated space.

That reminds me. I forgot to mention that there should be an easy way to go back to the default spine font. If you don't go and look what the font is used by the rest of the GUI, you won't know and cannot go back. A selection at the top of the font list that says Default system font would do.

IMO: the best place to put the emblem is below the spine (i.e. on the shelf on which the book sits), rather than on the spine itself.

Curious: what does "Automatic" placement do?
