Do I have to convert to kepub?
The lad won a Kobo Sage from the local library by writing a book report...I have a Kindle so it's all new to me.
Do I NEED to convert to kepub when I sideload files? I've converted via Calibre and an online app, and then sideloaded those two and the original epub... they all worked fine and looked identical to me ...sorry if this is in the wrong sub |

No, you don't. Epub will work fine on a Kobo. Some people (like me) prefer to use kepub for one reason or another (e.g., pop-up footnote previews), but it's not obligatory.

For most books, I prefer ePub because the typesetting is better and you get a better looking reading experience.

No online app needed. Avoid as they are dodgy. |

There's a wiki article about kepub that you might find helpful.

I use kepub for books with very complex layouts, like footnotes. If not, epub is fine. If you're moving books over from a kindle, I think that will be the hard part.

I like kepubs for the better reading statistics. It will show the estimated remaining reading time for the current and for the next chapter. It helps me to decide if I have enough time to read another chapter.

If you read ePub, you get used to how ADE page numbers work and you can decide if you may have time to finish the chapter. The time remaining isn't accurate so it's not worth using.

Minor nit with the above comment is that if you need to select past the bottom of a page, kepub allows that while epub limits you to the current page.
