Actually nothing to do with robots. A maguffin to have mysteries based in an SF environment. He later wrote contemporary mystery stories.

If you've see the film, forget it. The book is quite different and absolutely brilliant mysteries involving apparent aberrant "robot" behaviour. It's not about the technology.
