There is a set of instructions out there that is easy to follow, if a bit tedious. There is also a python script associated with it that makes it a 1 step process, or rather only adds one step which is nice.

Basically, pretty much what I did though I used a batch file instead of a Python script (originally done for the earlier version of Sats tool). Personally, I prefer using an old Kindle to download the files since Sats method does require being run after every time you download a new book or books.

Okay something obviously changed at Amazon in the last day or two because this no longer works for me to remove DRM and I wind up with a KFX-ZIP file instead.

LOL But as of today, trying to import my latest Kindle purchase (it happens to be a newer release) into Calibre yields me only the KFX-ZIP file instead of converting to the KFX (I know this means it failed to remove the DRM). I even tried pulling the file down from my Kindle to my (Windows 11) PC first and then pull it into Calibre, but got the same results.

So I'm thinking maybe Amazon tightened up their DRM again. (I saw mention a few pages back of a tightened DRM?) And/or maybe a recent update to my PW5 has me now getting this hardened DRM. (I'm at 5.18.5.0.1 on my PW5.)

Has anyone else seen these issues crop up in the last day or two?

It's pretty well known that the latest Kindle update disabled the DRM removal.

Ah-ha! I just found another couple threads that confirmed version 5.18.5 on my PW5 is indeed the new problem.

Sorry I didn't see those before making my post above. I only decided to check my FW version while I was composing that message, and then after posting, went further searching down the rabbit hole.

I'm getting my old Voyage back online from it's dead battery state and hopefully that'll do the trick!!! 🤞🏼

My wife has an Oasis 3 and that wasn’t updated. I’m going to check later if this method still works because she has one book that was published after April and is Amazon exclusive.

An Oasis 3 should be fine regardless of book pub date. At the moment it affects Kindles which have received 5.18.5 and up. Potentially 11th and 12th gen, Colorsoft and Scribe.

Yup worked fine on my Voyage too which is still at 5.13 something.

I am curious whether any Scribe users running the latest firmware have encountered the new DRM so far?

I've upgraded my Scribe 2022 to 5.18.5, but I don't buy anything on Amazon these days. Does any one have a link to a free book that was published after the DRM change and can't be stripped on other Kindles? I'd be willing to download and see if DeDRM will strip it.

Publication date has nothing to do with this latest development.

Yes, a prior purchase will do as long as the Amazon web page for the book does not show Simultaneous device usage: Unlimited in the product details.
