I've started experiencing an error today which I've never seen before. It happens both when trying to update an existing fanfic, or downloading a new one. Whether the story is locked, or has an age restriction doesn't seem to matter.
It's the below followed by the story url:

Odd. HTTP 418 is "I'm a teapot." Maybe Cloudflare repurposed it.

I need to know story URL--or at the very list, story site--before I can even look at this.

I am experiencing this same error with every story as well, using archiveofourown.gay. Every single story I've tried - I've tried a bunch of random stories I've never heard of from the home page of ao3.gay, I've tried updates of my own stories - all of them immediately fail with this error. Metadata download completes immediately in less than a second - no matter how many stories - all with this failure.

Huh. I'm seeing that, too. Even with use_archiveofourown_gay.

AO3 has a banner that they're having some issue with creating bookmarks on the site; perhaps they are related.

HTTP 418 code was created as a joke, but the reference says:

Some websites use this response for requests they do not wish to handle, such as automated queries.

Yet another issue for one of the ProblematicSites. I'm honestly too tired of dealing with these issues to get too worked about them anymore.

Using browser cache instead still works for me:

You could also try flaresolverr.

And AO3 always has its own download link for epubs and other formats.

FYI, it looks like AO3's epubs do include images now.

At least, for fairly recent stories. I also found a story last updated 2021 with external <img> tags.

I have never managed to get browser cache to work for AO3. Could you explain what I need to do in the browser itself to make it work? With ffnet I just open the last chapter, or sometimes have had to sequence through all chapters, of a story. I have never managed to get this to succeed with AO3.

Recently started using FFF on scribblehub and as recommended in previous posts used FlareSolverr as a conduit(?)

Works mostly ok.

Most times it seems to there is no challenge. But every 10-15 chapters(?) there is a challenge and most times it is solved. Occasional however there is a hick-up when it times out while solving the challenge.
About 10% of the stories I try to retrieve fail due to timing out, but trying again will eventually get it.

But I am only a guest at scribblehub.

Currently my personal.ini entry for scribblehub is only:

use_flaresolverr_proxy:true

Would creating an account and putting a username and password in FFF's personal.ini skip the challenge?

Another thing.....

Many of these stories consist of many short chapters. Its not unusual to see a story with 100-200 chapters and some with over 1000.

Is there a way to configure FFF to get say 20 or 50 chapters at a time? This would, for instance, prevent a download getting 60% of the way through a story then timing out and canceling, and having to start all over again.

I don't actually know anything about scribblehub in particular.

You can set continue_on_chapter_error:true to save any chapters that completed with placeholders for failed chapters. Updating the epub will attempt to replace the failed chapters.

You can put a chapter range after the story URL when you download it to limit which chapters are downloaded, example:
https://www.fanfiction.net/s/11111/1/Title[5-8]

Search also ignore_chapter_url_list and first_chapter / last_chapter.
