I'm on a Kobo Clara HD and font size is the one mentioned in the Kobo eReader.conf file.

I am using the non weighted version since Kobo's advanced font options seem adequate enough to get the job done.

Sorry for what might seem like a noob question, but what's the difference between the SP and non SP versions of the NoWeight files? I am guessing one has the smaller spacing, but is that what SP stands for? Not sure why it's not SS, but perhaps I'm being pedantic (or it's my ADHD coming through)

you are correct int hat the SP version has a smaller space. That's the one I use. I used SP to stand for space. I didn't think of SS. It's been SP for all this time so it stays as SP.

I just noticed that a few days ago, Charis SIL got updated to version 7. Any plans on carrying over your tweaks to this? https://software.sil.org/charis/v7changes/

Thank you for letting know that Charis has been updated.

It seems to be a perfect drop in replacement for the CharInk6SP with almost no changes required.

So, I've been using Charis 7.0 for a month now.

After taking it through SIL's TypeTuner to replace tabular numbers with old-style, and combined with Kobo's advanced font options, I find it to be a lot better than the predecessor versions without any font-level tinkering (better kerning, font proportions, etc.).

I assume this release makes all the previous versions and future font adjustments redundant?

Out of interest, why did you find the need to modify the font instead of using CSS?

You could, normally, use features like

  font-variant-numeric: tabular-nums lining-nums;
  font-feature-settings: "tnum" "lnum";

or

  font-variant-numeric: proportional-nums oldstyle-nums;
  font-feature-settings: "pnum" "onum";

(If possible, don’t use font-feature-settings but the higher-level font-variant-numeric above.)

I also like Charis SIL v7, and it works nicely in my test file:

The problem is that if you use ePub on a Kobo, you cannot use the code you posted to make changes to how the font displays. ePub works and an old version of RMSDK. You would need to read KePub.

Actually, the 7.0 release does not negate the need to tinker with the font. You still need kerning and line height adjustment as well as the reduced space for the SP version.

Unfortunately I don’t have a Kobo for testing. Is that a KePub format issue?

The older RMSDK renderer used for ePubs on Kobo ereaders does not support a lot of advanced CSS. The webkit based renderer used for kepubs supports a lot more ePub advanced CSS. IIRC, RMSDK only supports font-variant: normal; and font-variant small-caps;.
