Major Gripe

One thing that's really bugging me this year is the constant push to sell used electronic devices. Stores mix them in with new devices and sometimes they make it hard to determine if it's used or not. Even after applying filters (when available), they sometimes sneak in the used devices. To say this bothers me, is putting it mildly.

Personally, I never buy used electronics. YMMV

For me it depends on how it's being sold. I'm okay with manufacturer refurbished electronics sometimes and have gotten some great deals on those in the past. The Nook HD+s I have were dirt cheap and great tablets for the time. I read a ridiculous amount of manga on those. But seller refurbished or straight up used I tend to avoid.

I bought a used smartphone once (Galaxy S5) and it didn't last very long compared to the new ones I'd had before and have had since. On the other hand I got a used Nexus 7 (2013) for mom, since by that point I couldn't get her a new one with 32GB and she needed more space. That tablet still works, although I stopped using it years ago.

But pushing used that hard is disgusting. That's one thing I think Amazon does a decent job with, most of the time the listing is for new but it lets you know there may be cheaper options available from other sellers, including used ones.

My two pet peeves regarding used electronics:

• A lack of clarity regarding what “refurbished” actually means
• A minuscule discount from the price of a new device

I wouldn’t buy used from a private seller; what’s your recourse?

Generally speaking, for me to buy used it would have to be at a honking huge discount. If something were cheap enough I might take a chance.

I feel the same way about "seconds."

For example, Harry & David sells its misshapen pears under the name Mavericks. But last time I got a catalogue, there was only a one-dollar discount! Why not go first class for only a dollar more?

Something to Consider

This BF could very well see the end of low prices for awhile. If proposed tariffs go into effect, count on seeing prices jacked up quite a bit. So now may be the time to get those items you've been putting off or may need in the near future.

So far, I've already picked up a new Chromebook. In the next few days, I'll be getting a new microwave and cellphone. That should tide me over for several more years.

I got Hulu too, though I didn't use it much last time. Also Britbox and Acorn have enough new stuff to make a month or two worthwhile at $2-ish.This year I've taken time to wade through mundane stuff like furnace and refrig filters, socks, kitchen supplies etc. and saved maybe 25% on items I'd have to buy anyway sooner or later. Took another look at BD ROM drives but still not cost-effective enough to warrant the hassle.

Over the past 2 or 3 years I've gotten into estate sales, online auctions and Facebook Marketplace for many unbelievable bargains - way more fun than BF...
