Device: Kindle Basic 11th Gen (2024 Release).
I've just taken delivery of a brand new Kindle basic to replace my PW. I got it for IMO at a very good price (trade in + discount = £45.99 or US$59.85).

Firmware is stated as 5.16.20.0.1. I downloaded 'update_kindle_11th_5.17.1.bin', put it in the root of my new basic but it was reported as incorrect and rejected. Any ideas what I am doing wrong or is it just that the file is corrupt? I always prefer to manually update rather than OTA. Thanks.

Your new Kindle is 12th generation. The update you downloaded is for 11th generation. There are no updates yet for the new 12th gen Kindles.

Please don't sneer. In another post I said that I am 77 and have severe arthritis in both hands. I was looking for a reader that weighs less and I can now confirm it is noticeably lighter for me. Yes, I could use a stand but I like to read lying on my side in bed and I can't get a stand that works that way for me.

I guess some people just can't help being a twerp.

Looks like amazon is still going strong keeping everyone confused with their consistently inconsistent and confusing model nomenclature progression. I guess they presume that of course it is clear that 11th generation and 11th generation, 2024 release are completely different.

You just made a MAJOR mistake. You can't use Download & Transfer via USB with your 2024 Kindle Basic. You need an older Kindle registered to your account.

I don't want to disagree with you but see my screenshot. The right hand pane is the download to my E drive and the left hand pane is the .bin file which I have transferred by USB to my new basic. The file is showing but the Kindle then rejects it as incorrect when I try the upgrade.

The amazon process "Download & Transfer via USB" has nothing to do with firmware updates.

As post #48 stated, the firmware that you downloaded is for a previous model. Complain to amazon that their terminology is inconsistent and confusing.

I don't think that he was intentionally hurtful. People don't quite follow every possible post, and they don't associate them with same posters. Weight can be an important aspect of readers, I'm sure that you've found something that fits you well.

Yeah, the generation stuff gets a little confusing.

Hope you enjoy your new basic. There are a lot of people doing the same trade in on the reddit kindle forum. The last two generations of basics look like great devices and they ARE the lightest of all kindle types -- I have a soft spot for the recessed screens, and this is one reason I always keep my Paperwhite 3 - it's not as snappy as the basic but same screen size and recessed screen, so sometimes I get in the mood for that, especially outdoors.

I'm actually quite surprised how light it feels. It's also, of course a bit smaller. Considering the trade in value and the promotional discount, it seemed pretty much a no brainer to me

11th generation Kindle
