If I very quickly go and Eject the Kindle in Step 3, it then boots normally, but in usbms mode, so upon boot the screen says "connect to PC, etc etc", and I can see it on PC. Then I eject, Kindle mode is normal, but no usbnet.

So, it seems to me that timing of the usbnet is either wrong, or there is now a new safety check of the things on Kindle during boot, since it doesn't let usbnet start (beyond the first line, so probably it doesn't even start).

Should go and look (and only look ) inside the upstart scripts?

Where in the boot sequence do you usually intercept usbnet?

Try out this version, works on Kindle Scribe.
1) Aligned all colons
2) Added preventive paddings with leading spaces
3) Voltage has now separate line
4) The percentage sign is printed OK with eips, the old comment must be referring to very old FW...

It would be a good idea to have one extension that supports different devices. Maybe I'll look into that in a while.

Like I said, there's a long history of weird shit happening when you do that, and it varied across the years; but, yes, it's roughly familiar.

As a sidenote, I would *strongly* recommend *not* attempting to mess with upstart jobs on a device without serial access (or at least a recovery option, e.g., RP/CRP), as you *will* soft-brick it if you screw up (and it is *very* easy to do so).

It's tied to volumd, which very well may need to be rethought depending on how the MTP situation evolves.

Yep, that's why I only inteded to only look
There is also no RP/CRP for 5.16.x yet, so I'll just be careful.

I am on 5.16.2, which is not MTP yet (it appeared in 5.16.3 and on).

I'll just focus my Tinkering Mana™ on converting manga or something xD

For now, I enabled SSH on boot + SSH over Wi-Fi.
1) This helps to save KOReader if I plug it to PC while reading - usbnet replaces usbms.
2) I will just remember to unplug before doing restart, which should be rare anyway.
