Kenzaburo Oe has died at age 88

From The Guardian:

Quote:
Spanning fiction and essays, Oe’s work tackled a wide range of subjects from militarism and nuclear disarmament to innocence and trauma, and he became an outspoken champion for the voiceless in the face of what he regarded as his country’s failures. Regarded by some in Japan as distinctly western, Oe’s style was often likened to William Faulkner; in his own words, in his writing he would “start from my personal matters and then link it up with society, the state and the world”.
Oe's fiction has never been an easy read, but I've always felt better for having read it.

Truly sad news. I've enjoyed some of his fiction though it definitely required concentration.

I enjoyed his work very much. (Now time for a re-read.)

A great Nobel-winning author.

I almost bought his A Personal Matter, but felt it would be too brutal.

I'm neither a parent generally or a father specifically, so maybe it did not impact me as much, but A Personal Matter was a stellar piece of work.
