Kindle disappeared.
One minute it was in my file explorer, then it disappeared right in front of my eyes...

What the actual f***...???

I now get only "usb drive" and when I click on it I'm prompted to "insert disk into usb drive"

Have you tried the normal fixes? A different USB cable? A reboot of the computer? Ejecting the USB connection, and then replugging it in?

Is the device a Kindle e-ink reader, or a Fire tablet?

Yep, tried everything. Literally disappeared in front of my eyes.

I've used many different Kindles since 2009, and this has never been my experience. I'd wager it is a security setting on your PC. I've had cables go bad, but that's it.

On the laptop there is no security, no firewall, no anti virus nada.
Plus, this was working fine until it disappeared.

Oh, and a simple google search reveals millions of hits with the exact same problem.

The only thing left for you is to restore the kindle to factory settings. If that doesn't help either then I hope you still have it under warranty....
