Kobo Plus in US/Other Subscription options

Is it possible to subscribe to Kobo Plus if you are a US resident?
Are there any "workarounds" that actually work, such as using gift certificate on Kobo's Canadian site?

What other subscription plans make sense for Kobo readers?

Is a Kindle subscription plan + Calibre a viable option?

TIA

I have successfully set my Kobo to use the Japanese store once, but it was a few years back, and I've misplaced the steps I took. Theoretically, you could shop the Canadian store from the US if your Kobo was setup as a Canadian Kobo with a Canadian account, but I don't know about Kobo Plus. I've heard it's more stringent.

The problem with subscription plans with the Kobo is that if there isn't a native app, there isn't a way to authorized the web content. People have wanted to access their paywall news using Kobo's Pocket support, but without web authorization, it can't happen. The Kobo web browser is very bare bones.

Yes, but then you'd be stripping the DRM from the books and robbing the authors of their payment. They only get paid if you read the book on the Kindle.

Buying from a foreign Kobo store is very easy. I mainly buy from Amazon. The only time I buy from Kobo is when I need a UK exclusive book.

Having said that, I do imagine subscribing to Kobo Plus might be more complicated than buying books here and there. I don't know for sure. I haven't looked.
