A words per page system works just as well for the calibre plugin, arguably better since it wont have the bloat of redundant code that adobe does. It will be consistent across devices since "x" number of words = a page.

That is not the ADE method, and functions for both an as you're reading, and calibre plugin method to tell you how long a book is.

Which was mentioned in the linked thread a few posts back, and in this thread.

Stop being a shill for Adobes page numbering system, even the people who created it have said it was all based on arbitrary numbers.

It's a very rare example, so maybe I shouldn't cite such an extreme outlier in a discussion. But I did have 1 book that was over 700 ADE pages, come out to less than 300 pages after some manual code/formatting clean up.

Of course, talking about that as a percentage entirely depends on which direction you count.... (is it a 50% reduction, or 100% bloat?,,, I don't know, I dropped out of college.)

I still think that Jwolf's repeated assertion that ADE page numbers is somehow magically a better indication of book length, compared to other books, is complete bunk.

It does have the benefit of being consistent across devices. But in my mind, this is entirely subjective preference, and I haven't seen any kind of objective superiority for any of the methods. (Except for epub page map that is keyed to a specific edition/isbn. You should be able to use those page numbers for 'proper' citations.)

It may be that page numbers are not really so important, especially their accuracy or lack of.
Unless you are producing a learned tome with references to other books, all you really need is a rough idea of how far through the book/chapter you are. There are many ways for the Kobo to show this.
I'm more concerned with actually reading than measuring my progress, though I may be unusual.

it's relatively clear from my post at 230 (or it should be) what i was specifically talking about regarding 1 page = 1 screen. it's why i prefer reading kepub over epub all day everyday. i know it's not what you are discussing about how long an eBook is.

I like that kepubs display remaining page count per chapter according to the 1 page = 1 screen rather than some arbitrary page count.

For total ebook length I prefer using the word count (obtained via Count Pages plugin) which is always consistent, and doesn't require an arbitrary definition on what a "page" is.

I don't know if KePub is 1 page = 1 screen in firmware 4.34. But before then, it wasn't always 1/1. I don't know if that was a bug or on purpose.

It's not perfect, but pretty close.

The other night I was on page 350 of a 371 page book and the last chapter was 20 pages with no extra pages. So not perfect. But accurate enough.

There's no Hebrew support either, but all it take is to add a font with the correct glyphs and you'll probably be good to go.
