Tales of the City by Armistead Maupin is $1.99 at Amazon US. It's a classic, telling stories from a different time when San Fransisco was a different city. I had trouble getting into the stories because of the format (they were originally written in short snippets for publication in the San Fransisco Chronicle). Worth reading for a throw back to when macramé was popular and San Fransisco was the center of the gay universe.

I have not read the book but the movie was a real eye-opener.

Even more shocking, the last of the Magdalen Asylums was not closed until 1996. And it wasn't because of any moral awakening that the treatment of the girls was essentially slavery; it was because most homes in Ireland by then had their own washer and dryer, and the demand for laundry services had dropped off.

The Water-Method Man by John Irving is $1.99 at Amazon US. I haven't read this one yet. It is pretty widely acknowledged that it is not his best work. But I bought it. The story sounds interesting.

If you're a John Irving fan - as I am! - then this is required reading. I enjoyed it.

If not a fan, then I would say skip this one. (I think [?] it was his first novel.)
