It's quitting time, so I'm outta here. But like all addicts, I'll probably be back online before bedtime, you know, need a fix before sleep, etc etc and so on... Last edited by DixieGal; 04-10-2009 at 06:26 PM. |

This has given me a degree of comfort because since grade school I've never felt contrained to the single spelling of a wrod. |

![]() As to the main topic, I have to say I'm just happy if people make an effort with their spelling and grammar. Being anal about it comes off too elitist to me. Nearly everyone makes regular mistakes and has learned a particular spelling or word-use that is incorrect. I know I certainly do, but I -do- try very hard to avoid gross deviations from preferred use and form. I wouldn't even mind polite corrections by others, as long as they are genuinely polite from my friends. If you regularly read posts on the forum you'll find that 90% of 'polite suggestions' are nothing more then a way of insulting someone else but sticking a friendly label on it. And that isn't what I perceived from the OP. However, I do despise full-blown bastardization of the language, such as those that communicate thoroughly in l33t speak, script-kiddie or TXT (sp?) messaging, btw i h8 ur bff jil +u... When kids start out writing (usually in kindergarten here in the US), we tell them to use "inventive spelling", use whatever letters (or pictures) they need to tell the story. A lot of what I read looked just like this! Of course, they were only 5 years old!! ![]() Seriously, though, we teachers do our best to teach kids spelling, the newest thing is Word Study - grouping like words together to help understand commonality rules, etc., but it all boils down to sounding things out and memorization. Unfortunately, as kids get older they rely more and more on computers to do the work for them. But, hey, the English language is messy, with ambiguous rules and words from other languages thrown in just to keep us on our toes!! I personally love my Spell Checker!! Kaz |

The best thing that ever happened to my spelling and vocabulary was when my Grandmother decided I should learn about Latin, Greek, and Germanic/Anglo-Saxon root-words, their spellings and their meanings. If you can identify those and conjugate them (is conjugate really the word I'm looking for?) you can figure your way through most of English quite nicely. Of course it doesn't help with the words that are borrowed from other languages, made up, or otherwise odd. But it does cover a surprising fraction of the words you need, while giving them a unified framework. Xenophon |
