If you like that, which presumably you do, you may well like "The Man in the Iron Mask," the one with Depardieu, DiCaprio, Irons, Byrne and...I'm forgetting someone...ah, yes, Malkovich.

Yes, the one with Sheen/Sutherland/etc. I know it’s only vaguely based on the novel, but to me it’s a quintessential OTT, camp 1990s movie, like Robin Hood. My sister was obsessed with TMitIM for a while, and it wasn’t my thing. I’ve also added Leon, The Addams Family and The Candyman.

Whatsisname, John Malkovich, tells an absolutely hilarious story about filming with Gerard Depardieu, who at that time, learnt his lines phonetically. Apparently, they were filming some big scene, when Porthos (Depardieu) is meant to race in with an alert of danger for D'Artagnan (Gabriel Byrne). Depardieu came flying in, cameras rolling and then just blathered incoherently. Byrne tried to run with it, but...lost it laughing. You have to hear Malkovich tell it--my recitation is boring. But between the movie itself, which I also consider your basic OTT romp from that era, and some of the stories that came out of the filming, I have a soft spot for that movie.

I'm okay with rewatching it--it's our first time back through since it originally aired. I'm looking for almost anything else to watch, though.

I don't mean instead of the XFiles, per se (we're also just wrapping up S2), but just...man, anything. Finished up Stranger Things S. 4 part 1 or whatever they're calling it. Everything I look at makes me go "meh." (Altho I might see if Babylon5 has held up...)

On Saturday my sister and I watched Death on the Nile. It didn't do much for me. It was too long and the accents were too OTT and distracting.

Last night I started the third season of Snowpiercer. Which I'm enjoying.

Today Musical Week starts. I think I'll use a randomizer app to decide which one(s) to watch each night.

I fell asleep on it. I wasn't thrilled with all the unnecessary changes and it just felt...overblown. As gaudy and silly as they are, I prefer both the Poirot TV version of it and the Ustinov versions. And of those, I guess--I find myself surprised to say it--I'd go for the Ustinov version.

I may have to try that at some point, although mostly, I don't get the attraction for folks. I thought the movie was pretty gross.

Yes, last week I realized it's been a while since I've watched Tommy, then I realized I've never seen Quadrophenia (technically not a musical, but close enough for me) and then I started thinking of all the musicals I like(d) but haven't seen in a while (Rocky Horror, Little Shop of Horrors) and the ones I always wanted to but never have gotten around to (Cabaret, Repo! A Genetic Opera, Tenacious D in the Pick of Destiny).

Next week is 90s week and the week after probably foreign language movies (not in English or Dutch). If I like the themed weeks I might continue for the rest of the summer. It's a good way to work on my to watch list.

My Spin the Wheel app landed on Little Shop of Horrors for tonight.

AH! Alrighty. I get it. I'm not normally a musical gal, but on occasion...

BTW, although the plotting, etc. of Burlesque is not wonderful, the music is AMAZING and fantastic. I play it around here when I need a pop of lift. Oh and the dance numbers are also...just aaaaahmazing. I vaguely remember, through the mists of time, when I was in that type of shape, ha!

ETA: I should note, having been around for the original Mouseketeers, I was not young enough to watch those "new" Mouseketeers, the ones that hatched Britney Spears, etc.

So...suffice to say, I wasn't an "Xtina!" fan, right? I have to say, when that girl opened her mouth in the big "the show must go on" scene, in Burlesque, I was gobsmacked. I had no idea she had pipes like that. Man, that's some talent.

Not the first scene, where she sings a bit...there's not much there. But DAMN, later? Holy crapdoodle, that girl has range, power...everything. It's a real pleasure to hear someone with talent like that.

I enjoyed Little Shop of Horrors. I saw it around 30 years ago. It was during summer, we were on vacation, we only got the three national channels and it was aired when my sister was still awake. I'm sure it wouldn't be aired on a national TV channel now, but then we had a couple of broadcasters* that were geared towards a younger audience and one would always air movies in summer. Not sure what my mother thought of letting my sister (6-8 y.o. probably) and I watch it. But it was the 90s.

* in the Netherlands we have three national TV channels and a bunch of broadcasters (currently 14) that make programs. Each broadcaster has its own profile (eg religious, political left/right, younger audience, senior audience, etc)

If you liked the movie,gurl...go see it live. It's a hoot. Make sure you read everything before you go, so that you arrive properly...hmmm...outfitted.:-)

I just checked and there's alive performance of the stage musical on the 23rd in Amsterdam. I couldn't find any showings of the movie. No word about "appropriate attire" for the live musical though.

Occasionally they have outdoor showings of The Rocky Horror Picture Show where you are allowed/expected to bring your water gun. I can remember a showing on a nearby square and a couple of years ago a cinema which has a rooftop cinema in summer showed it.
