Well, it's been the case since I've used it, which is since late 2011.

Some aspects of the plugin did need configuration, though I think it was only the BN part and only because BN basically dropped support for the Nook for PC and Nook Study apps resulting in people not being able to login and generate a key.

Amazon, and Adobe just required you to have the appropriate app installed and logged in. Though if memory serves the kindle app had to be no newer than a specific version and I’m sure Jon would never forgive me if I don’t mention that Adobes was better if you used a specific version which escapes my memory at the moment.

You did need to open the plugins configuration option regardless though, that caused the keys to be automagically stored.

Nope. Not true. That's one of the types where you don't need to do anything but import the book.

Hmm. If I'm not mistaken, you do need to first have a properly keyed installation of ADE that can open the book on the system. Did the person with the issue confirm they had that...?

Looking at the code I believe you are correct. On Windows it looks in an Adobe part of the registry for activation information; on macOS it looks in an Adobe library directory for the same.

So you seem (I'm not checking the full logic) to have had to have activated Adobe Digital Editions once, though perhaps a very long time ago?

Indeed, I did have to add the key manually, as mentioned above. It didn't happen automatically. But even after importing that key the plugin still doesn't work, at least not with the file I have. I've tried this both on Linux and Windows (VM) -- no dice, the file stays DRM-ed.

Should not need to do this if you have ADE installed and registered. The only key you need is default_key which is added automatically the first time the plugin is run. If this isn't working for you then I second the suggestion that you ask for assistance over on github.

Digging through all the readmes and FAQs, I found that the author suggests that on Linux the plugin doesn't find the key automatically. That is expected, really, since Adobe keeps actively sabotaging all efforts to make their software work under desktop GNU/Linux... So they suggest to use the plugin's config dialog to create a key from a working and registered ADE installation. So I took up the key from my working Windows installation, and the plugin doesn't show any errors about this key -- but still it fails to take off the DRM under both Windows and Linux, anyway.

So yeah... I guess I will have to register a github account, too, after all...

As someone who does 90% of his work on Linux machines, this is the one of the very few situations where I'd recommend setting up a Windows virtual machine to do the task. I absolutely hate WINE and refuse to use it for anything any more.
