Some changes I saw from a quick look at the firmware:

Increased reporting of failure reasons when the cover of the current book cannot be shown on the lock screen. (See Kindle log files available using the ;dm search command.)

If unable to extract the cover image then show the book's title and author on the lock screen instead. ("Book Cover Image is either not present or Corrupted hence returning a text based Cover Template")

Added Linux wl (wireless lan) command, potentially useful for jailbroken devices.

I do not have access to Kindle source code other than the open source software that Amazon has to share.

Kindle firmware releases can be unpacked into a Linux file system using NiLuJe's KindleTool. From there files can be examined using various development and debugging tools. Much of the Kindle application is written in Java.

I've been trying to get my Voyage to show the cover on the main screen since 5.13.5. Just upgraded to .6 and still no cover. I wonder what is Amazon up to with this being release of cover art.

The threads here I have been following give the impression it was a slow rollout, first in other countries, and then slowly across the US. There was no mention in the update notes on Amazon that this was a new feature, so why are they hiding it for some users? Odd.

The cover for the sleep screen is only for the ad-free firmware.

Well, my Oasis (9th gen) *is* ad-free (though not initially purchased that way), have updated to the latest firmware and STILL no cover for sleep screen option.

I've synced it, left the WiFi on for two days now, restarted it, nothing.

Amazon is the one company I know of that hides new features and randomly rolls them out instead of just allowing new features when the new firmware is installed.

I've never see Sony or Kobo do anything like that.
