Which firmware on latest orders from amazon?

Hi there,

So my kindle updated to 5.13.4 a couple of weeks ago, and I'm desperate to try kindle break.

I ordered a KOA3 from amazon this morning, but have just noticed that the 5.13.4 update was released in December (I thought it had only been a few weeks).

I will probably cancel the order - I hate not having the book cover for the screen 'saver', but I like pretty much everything else about my current KOA3.

The important bit of my post:
Can anyone tell me which firmware was on their recently ordered kindle from amazon?

P.S. I saw the comment from the person who bought one at BestBuy and it was on 5.12.4 - I 'need' the gold one though, which is not available for pick up from them.

Cancelling order - it seems a leeetle extravagant to get a new kindle just to have book cover screensavers. I was feeling very guilty - I would have sold my current one, obviously, but still.

I'm so annoyed with myself though - instead of reading the kindle drip thread, I assumed the kindle drip was a real danger so left the wifi on a couple of weeks ago to see if it would update - and it did. Stupid me, I should've read the thread.

Well, a new Kobo seems to be coming out soon. You could get that as a partner for your Oasis. Your Oasis probably feels lonely.

You can have covers as screensavers on a Kobo. As for myself, I don't see the point and have installed some random photos on my Libra for screensavers.

I’m sure it does feel lonely.

I know you can have covers as screensavers on a Kobo - I used to have an Aura One, the first one with the warm light. Really liked it, but I missed getting my newspapers and the kindle is great for foreign language dictionaries and I use the vocabulary builder. So I missed the ecosystem too much.

Maybe amazon will add the covers as screensavers as an option one day - I would be willing to pay a fee such as the $20 ad-removal fee to enable them.

I’ve always been tempted by the Libra, though, and would have been tempted by the Forma if not for the grey stripe issue.

I don't really care about the screensavers, but if I wasn't able to jb my kindle to use KOReader, I'd have probably sold it and bought a Kobo.

I was thinking about posting a message in the Open Sesame thread when I started working on the jailbreak just to let people know not to update their Kindles. I didn't want to disappoint anybody in case I failed, so I decided not to.

Don’t worry, I wasn’t even looking at the Open Sesame thread (until today, that is!) because I had resigned myself to the fact (what I thought was a fact, anyway) that the KOA3 would never be jailbreakable.

And, thanks for all your amazing work! I might try it out on my son's PW, which is still on 5.12.3!

I think the most likely way to get an older firmware from amazon is to buy a kindle without ads - as they have a longer delivery time frame. I'm assuming this is because they need to be dug out from the back of a warehouse, so are less likely to be updated.
Does that sound likely?

I can also check the date of manufacture from the serial number I guess, when it is paired to my account, and before it is delivered. Aggh.

I'm updating my son's PW now and I can't believe how easy this is compared to previous jailbreaks.

Updated to add: Or maybe certified refurbished kindles are less likely to have the most up-to-date software?

I would guess that no ads version would usually have older firmware because they sell slower. If they are in stock but take longer to deliver, I think that would be because they are in a warehouse farther away. If they are longer to deliver because out of stock, I think that increases the chance of getting newer firmware.

Yeah, I am hoping it's because they are not ordered as frequently and therefore are less likely to be running the most up-to-date firmware.

Mine too, re the refurbs, but a part of me is worried that maybe some of them are being returned because the firmware is too high for the jb. Which is probably really unlikely.

Yeah. I'd be more worried that some were returned because they had cosmetical defects, like an uneven frontlight, or battery issues.

My friend just ordered a KOA3 from Amazon (ES). The manufacture date seems to be 2021 March 21st, which also happens to be the day right after the one I've announced the jailbreak on.

He should get it in a few days, I'll report back on the firmware.

G000WL, Kindle Oasis 3 (2019) WiFi (8GB)

He's not sure if it's ad supported or not, I couldn't find that on the page he ordered it on either.

Thanks - no ads - I think ads are only on US kindles. Maybe UK as well, not sure.

It has no ads and comes without kindle unlimited.

Just heard from somebody else who got their G000WL KOA3 yesterday.
It was on 5.12.4, manufactured 2021 March 6th, ordered from Amazon.de.

Things are looking good!
