I guess the experience would be like an Onyx Boox Nova. Still, if I am only paying half of Nova3 I would be satisfied with the hardward provided. If I would like to buy a new e-reader I would consider this one.

I guess the OS should be similar to 6" Mi Reader (review).

Actually I owned Onyx Boox Nova and I am sort of regretted having a 7.8" e-reader. If I have a chance to get one again I would buy the Poke 3 and a Note 3/Remarkable 2. Use the Poke 3 during travel and use Note 3/Remarkable 2 at home.
Yeah, I understand wanting something bigger. I would probably have bought a Note Air, but it's very expensive and my worry is that the lower DPI would annoy me. I'm overly sensitive to that sort of thing.

However, I am considering buying a Hisense A5 Pro to have a small portable device - combined digital detox and mobile reading. (To me 6 inches is not any more portable than 10 or 13; I still need to have a backpack to consider taking an e-reader with me.)

On my Poke 2, I have a preferred .dict dictionary which I like to use (it is one I used with Koreader on my Kobo). To get it to be used by the Onyx dictionary app, I copied the .dict folder into a folder called “dicts” in the main storage. Then, within the settings section of the Onyx dictionary app, I selected the new dictionary as my default. I can’t remember if I had to reboot the Poke after putting the .dict folder into “dicts” folder in order for the dictionary app to see it.
GoldenDict supports morphology using hunspell dictionaries - is there similar functionality within the Onyx dictionary app now?

Did anyone already test this? Using Goldendict would for instance allow you to reuse the dictionaries in the Koreader directory. (Or is the Android implementation less configurable than the Linux one?)

It works on my Nova Pro! The results are not embedded though.

You are taken directly to the entry of the dictionary app but you have to get back to the book.

Now, if an update could embed or overlay the entry in the book, that would be great.

I have both the Hisense A5 and the A5 Pro CC. I got the 6 GB of RAM 128 GB of memory model of the A5 Pro CC. Very snappy.

Highly recommend the Hisense phones. Great little ereaders with extra versatility thanks to the camera and other features. Am virtually never without an ereader now.

If I could only have one model, I would go for the A5 Pro 6GB/128GB model. I opted for the colour instead because I already had the regular A5 model and I wanted the slight bit of colour for maps.

I now do most of my casual reading on my Hisense devices. I use my Onyx devices primarily for PDFs or note taking/sketching.

Neoreader could use custom dictionaries since 2.2 at least. But it can't use bgl files like goldendict. Strange.

Can you provide some screenshots? Because I don't see GoldenDict nowhere in pop-up menu.

You mean the nav-ball? You add it as an option. Neoreader does not interface with 3rd party dictionary apps (it should). Apps like alreader pro, moonreader, koreader, etc, can call 3rd party dictionary apps like goldendict, etc.

Hmm let me take a look at their new Hisense A7 (will be released on 22 Dec) and see what's the difference. Interesting.

I really want to have eink on my phone but I am afraid if I need to play game/watch video.

Yeah, the A5 Pro is the one I've been looking at to use as my primary phone. Annoyingly, I would still have to keep my other smartphone around for bank services (which require Google Play services). But I would be able to keep that in a drawer at home, and take it out to do my banking or video calls.

The colour e-ink seems a bit too washed out and undefined for me. I don't really need colour (I think). All I want is for the phone operations to work quick enough to be usable and for the reading experience to be pleasant. The only thing I want to be enjoyable on my phone is listening to music/podcasts and reading books. The other stuff I want to avoid as much as possible.

Interesting! I can't seem to find any information at all about an A7 device. Do you have any links? Do you know if this is a fully e-ink device or a combination like the A6L? This should be in 3 days, so we should be able to get some information soon.

I guess, I'll have to wait for at least another week before ordering anything, then.

In general, I quite agree. However, it can be quite useful to have a camera for scanning documents or taking pictures of a sign/text in a foreign language and then using OCR software to translate it. Having GPS can also be very useful when using maps.

All very valid points, covering the very things I do use my phone for! I've never tried any OCR software, but it sounds very practical. I have tons of pictures of documents that I've needed to scan/take a photo of for whatever reason on my phone.

Some time ago I bought a dumbphone with a basic camera and GPS. It has a rudimentary version of Google Maps that barely works. I bought this phone to get off my smartphone, which I find too addictive; but much functionality is lacking, and the screen is horrible.

An e-ink smartphone is just the thing I've been wishing for for ages! I've somehow managed to miss their entrance onto the market. The only one I found when I searched the internet a year ago were the lightphone (too expensive and locked down) and the yotaphone (too old, and I don't like the idea of two screens). I even looked into turning my smartphone black and white, but my phone is too old for that functionality... All for the better, I guess.

From GoodeReader and TechToday (please use Google Translate)

EDIT: The spec is out (I know it is chinese but I think you know what's the difference, based on the numbers). The selling price is $1999RMB ($305 USD). You can check the full spec in JD.com. Just one more note, the color version of A7 CC version will come in Feb.

I have a questions for you and the people here using Moon Reader. How do you make them look decent in the Nova 3?

I have played around with my device the last couple of days, downloaded a bunch of dictionaries, so that I've got goldendict all set up. Mainly, I've been reading in Russian in Koreader using Aard2 with Russian wiktionary, which works great. Neoreader also looks good, but when I try to access 3rd party dictionaries it complains that I should first install them, even though I have both goldendict and aard2 installed..

My optimal setup would be to set up Koreader to read in Russian and the other readers to be used for a variety of languages using goldendict. The problem is that all readers except Koreader and Neoreader look horrible: the text is unfocused and blurry, elements in the UI are hard to see and it's almost impossible to read. In Alreader I found a setting to optimize for e-ink, but that didn't do much. In the others I haven't even found that much. I have Librera Pro, Moon Reader Pro and Alreader installed on the device.

So how do I configure them to look good enough to use? Any help with this appreciated!

goldendict and aard2 are dictionary readers; they are not dictionaries. You need to add dictionaries to them otherwise they are empty. I generally use *.bgl dictionaries. stardict work too, but that is an older format, with maybe not as good content.

Regarding visual problems, I do not use Alreader. I use Alreader Pro X. I highly reccommend you use Alreader Pro X. The interface is better, it's much simpler to use, less problems with e-ink.

Also goldendict works better with it.

Edit: I've looked for Alreader Pro X, but it's hard to find. Weird. I have an apk specifically for e-ink. Works great. But I cannot find it on the web. Maybe I can upload it somewhere.
