unable to open books

I have used Calibre but for some reason it is NOT opening any books, I keep getting errors. Here is the error for one of the books:

That error indicates the book you are trying to view has an empty spine (i.e. no content).

that makes no sense. I get that same error to epubs that I was able to read before!

Before what? And I dont know what you mean by "it makes no sense". The error is the error. I've told you what it means.

I have epubs that I was able to read before but now with the last releases of the software, I am no longer able to view them!

Again, that error indicates the book you are viewing is empty of content. If you think that is not the case, then open a bug report and attach the file in question.

Interesting that you can't answer the question as to why I was able to read before and now with a newer release the books I have read/reading no longer open...

So explain how they got corrupted... How is it that I was able to read a book in a previous release but not anymore... how to fix the book??? I have even redownloaded the latest books and they still do not open.... Isn't there a repair tool?

YOU (or your security suite) did something to a large group of files (books)

every time I read here that folk do blanket Metadata update or other operations ON A WORKING set of books.
I suspect you used a older (private) Plugin that had a bug (or could not deal with a now malformed OPF) and left a mess.

(I know, I have had to fix (seriously edit) a few older titles (My Calibre Library was started a decade ago.) where something like this happened. I have no clue WHEN or WHAT, did it as I know they used to be good because I see tell tales of my edits)

It took me years to massage my initial load (I added 'empty books' for my entire SF and Fantasy, Library). ANY Metadata update on those is now on a PER BOOK basis. The only Bulkish update I do , is Tags (trim and consolidate) .

FWIW V5.x has not done any harm to anything I have worked on. Not worked in some cases, but NEVER HARMED.

What would be interesting is if you were to install another Epub reader and try that to see what happens.

Or copy the file to an Android phone or tablet and use Lithium. The iThings are better to test with a 3 party ebook reader app from the store than Apple default ereader.

Thank you. that program opened the epub that calibre was not able to and stated bad file.
