There's certainly no "rule" that you have to own a device in order to comment on it. Comment on, Bob - I'm certainly interested to hear your opinions!

I even got PMed as to why I cared since I didn't have a Gen3 when all I did was post a link that was Google translated.

Hidari, this is an open discussion forum. Please understand that forum members may well have opinions on a variety of devices. We have no plans to restrict members' freedom in this respect. And I, for one, can't understand why you are being unpleasant towards other members.

No matter what this Pocketbook can do, it doesn't do the one thing people purchased the Gen3 for. It does not read Mobipocket format eBooks (with or without DRM).

According to the Google translator, the device will read PDF, RTF, FB2, TXT, HTML, DJVU, CHM, PRC, EPUB, DOC. It would be interesting to know what the PRC support is like; also how well it actually manages with PDFs. I'm interested in reading a review of how well it functions in practice, before deciding whether it is an improvement on the Cybook. |

You can try the-ebook.org forums, pocket book has its own section there. Unfortunately, it's all in Russian and google translate sometimes has rough time translating it. Last edited by Abelturd; 03-20-2009 at 07:01 PM. | |

Slightly off-topic (but close), I have been mulling on the lack of major upgrades on the CyBook, and have come to the following speculation. (And it's just that, a personal speculation). The good people doing Openinkpot have commented on the space limitations of the Cybook in implementing OI. Add to that no major upgrades to CYbook, and this new semi-clone of Cybook that has all sort of extras that the Cybook doesn't....I wonder if the Cybook hasn't had a major upgrade to firmware because there is enough dedicated firmware memory for an upgrade? And this new semi-clone has more firmware memory, allowing all the extra bells and whistles we were expecting for the Cybook? Just a speculation.... |

Apparently, the CyBook which is now shipping has a faster processor and more RAM. It is conceivable that a firmware update would only operate on these new CyBooks.

Some time this year, it would appear. On the firmware of current CyBooks, the "About" screen shows the CPU speed. Those machines bought in January show "200MHz"; current CyBooks show "400MHz".

But an upgrade would have to be able to retrofit to the earlier models. The PR would be terrible if you couldn't get all the new features on eariler Cybook builds.
