Remember sitting down to relax with a good hardbound or paperback book. You leisurely turned the paper page with your fingers and inevitably needed to readjust the entire book in your hand(s) with each page flip to comfortably read the left page, then the right, then the left again. As you progressed through the book, more adjustments were needed to keep your hands from cramping. The need to take a respite from reading was due more to the need to flex your fingers and wrists than it was to rest your eyes. ![]() Let’s not even delve into the personal decisions such as: to dog-ear or bookmark, to break the spine or not, to read the HB with the paper jacket on or off, to mark up the book permanently or use sticky notes or cards, etc., etc. ![]() Without rehashing all the obvious benefits of electronic book reading devices and their shortcomings, I’d like to make one specific observation on the subject. When I touch the page turn button on my Sony Reader, the page turns happen in the blink of an eye. I’ve heard many people complaining about the page turns being too slow. I see no reason why my Reader would have faster page turns than everyone else’s. So I ask you seriously . . . when you want to relax with a good book, is the blink of an eye REALLY too long to wait for the next page?

Yeah, I thought that was pretty silly when someone said in a "what do you want in a Kindle?" thread, that the pages need to turn faster. *sheesh* THese are ebooks, not whacky computers!

Okay . . . I’m talking real memories here. GOOGLE doesn’t count for a memory, just a fact checker or image retriever.
PORTABLE MUSIC PLAYERS are now as small as binder clips and you can carry hundreds of songs on them, play it all day long and never worry about the battery going dead unexpectedly. ![]() I remember my first portable music player. It was called a transistor radio. It was about as big as a breadbox, required 8 or 10 “D” size batteries that would drain and die after about 2 hours of ON time (if that). It had scratchy monaural single speaker sound that would fade in and out depending on which direction you were standing, and the MOST you could ever HOPE for was to tune in 1 of the 2 stations possible on the monster. Oh, the freedom of movement that afforded us.

Portable record player.
It was in a case about the size of a manual typewriter case and you carried it "somewhere" else and plugged it into an outlet. Upstairs, downstairs, my room, your room, your friends house, even outside! Wow! Music anywhere!

And lots and lots of VINYL disks to play on it: 45s, 33-1/3s, 78s. You could stack a dozen or so "Records" on the spindle and after one would play, the next in the stack would drop and play automatically as if by magic. We'd dance all day long.

) Next, up was the bracelet AM/FM radio. Then.. 8 tracks (that took up the whole glove box) we could throw those things all over the car and they would still play when you put them in ![]() Yeah, we'd dance all day and night. Usually, it was safer to sit on the ground and sway.. ... it was the "era" you know?

I've still got hundreds of 45s and hundreds of LPs. I've been converting them (as well as my cassette tapes) to MP3s little by little. It's a monumental task and I'm sure I'll never get them all done. Even if I DID manage to convert them all, I doubt if I could ever get rid of the good ole vinyl. Too much of a SENTIMENTAL JOURNEY for me. They sure take up a lot of space though.

Did you yield the power of the flower?
I fondly remember poodle skirts, bobby socks and saddle shoes . . . hanging out at the local "Sweet Shop," playing pinball, listening to the juke box and drinking Cherry Cokes mixed and made right at the soda fountain . . . and Friday night dances. |

One thing that is less easy in an electronic book, is to check back (say) 10 pages ....
Remember the days before political correctness ........ ! |
